Story
Fossil fuels and livestock grazing are often targeted as major culprits behind climate change and desertification. But Allan Savory, cofounder of the Savory Institute, begs to differ. The bigger problem, he warns, is our mismanagement of resources. Livestock grazing is not the problem; it's how we graze livestock. If we don't change the way we approach land management, irreparable harm from climate change could continue long after we replace fossil fuels.

Soil is the unlikely story of our most maligned resource as swashbuckling hero. A saga of bombs, ice ages and civilisations falling. Of ancient hunger, modern sicknesses and gastronomic delight. It features poison gas, climate collapse and a mind-blowing explanation of how rain is formed. For too long, we've not only neglected the land beneath us, we've squandered and debased it, by over-clearing, over-grazing and over-ploughing.

Call it "Zen and the Art of Farming" or a "Little Green Book", Masanobu Fukuoka's manifesto about farming, eating, and the limits of human knowledge presents a radical challenge to the global systems we rely on for our food. At the same time, it is a spiritual memoir of a man whose innovative system of cultivating the earth reflects a deep faith in the wholeness and balance of the natural world. As Wendell Berry writes in his preface, the book "is valuable to us because it is at once practical and philosophical."

Montgomery introduces us to farmers around the world at the heart of a brewing soil health revolution that could bring humanity's ailing soil back to life remarkably fast.

Story
Have you ever desired, deep within your soul, to make a comfortable full-time living from a farming enterprise? Too often people dare not even vocalize this desire because it seems absurd. It's like thinking the unthinkable. After all, the farm population is dwindling. It takes too much capital to start. The pay is too low. The working conditions are dusty, smelly and noisy: Not the place to raise a family. This is all true, and more, for most farmers.

The use of these nontraditional agricultural techniques show how varied operations can give back to the earth rather than degrade it.

Publisher's Summary
Restoration Agriculture reveals how to sustainably grow perennial food crops that can feed us in our resource-compromised future.
The restoration agriculture system described in this award-winning book works! It is possible for humans to produce staple foods using perennial agricultural ecosystems that actually improve the quality of the environment. This can be done on a backyard, farm, or ranch scale and is needed right now - on a global scale.
Restoration Agriculture explains how we can have all of the benefits of natural, perennial ecosystems and create agricultural systems that imitate nature in form and function while still providing for our food, building, fuel, and many other needs. Using the restoration agriculture system, an oak savanna mimic will produce more than twice the number of edible human calories per acre as an average acre of corn, never needs to be planted again, prevents erosion, creates oil, and can be managed with no fossil fuel inputs. This book, based on real-world practices, presents an alternative to the agriculture system of eradication and offers exciting hope for our future.

Well worth the listen.
I really enjoyed Restoration Agriculture. A thorough detailing of concepts and practices, though very North American focused, from someone who is actually living this way. I would have loved some more information on tropical and drier environments as I'm Australian, but that wasn't the focus of the book. Some Audible narrations can be hard to listen to, but this guy was easy to listen to.

Read this book as soon as possible
I bought this book months ago and have only just gotten around to reading it. Man, what an eye opener. All the things I have been saying, talking about and trying to explain to others is well laid out and discussed in this book.
If you are already active in the area of agroforestry, food forest farming, or syntropics then you might not learn a great deal but for those starting out on the journey, struggling with converting from traditional farming or wanting to turn your patch into a resilient food production space that feeds your family then you will learn a great deal from this book.
I have bookmarked a few pages to go back over and over and apply them to my soul and circumstances. Do not think that you can just take the advise in this book and all of a sudden be in an abundance of growth. You still need to plan for your climate, soil health etc. but what he is saying will work!

Some good points
It explains basic concepts for the first few chapters, so if you've listened to a few of these it'll be a bit slow.
Good explanation but very America centric. Crunches the numbers well in comparison to corn fields. Loved the run down of plants for each biome. It's well narrated and worth a listen.
