This was a really funny time travel romance that really contrasted the main character's cultural differences. Compared to other time travel books the heroin comes with a whole ensemble of 21st century paraphernalia, which I really liked. The story flows nicely and all characters are believable. The world building is great and there are no inconsistencies in the story line. All in all a funny, light and entertaining story on a slow burn. The narration is superb with different intonations. Highly recommended.

I loved this book. It’s not my usual reading material but I decided to buy it after I listened to the first book in the series. It’s full of laugh out loud moments and some thought provoking insights eg the comparison between 13th century teenagers and ours and the lack of noise and pollution. And some comments about the ups and downs of Medieval castle-living (not for people fond of hot showers).

I have read quite a bit of Duvall’s work and whilst she’s not a literary genius, she is a good storyteller. And that is usually good enough for me.
I was interested in this story because my first encounter with Duvall was her Immortal Guardian series so I was very pleased when I discovered what is ultimately a prequel of sorts.

The first of the two book in this series was good. This one, however, has been a struggle. I have about an hour left and I just can’t bring myself to do it.

I hated the female protagonist. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not American but I found her extremely weak minded and overly dramatic. In fact the overbearing American-ness of her character was very off putting, often bordering on offensive.

Additionally, I found it super odd that an American narrator was selected for this book despite it being set in England. So the general narration was all American accented and the ‘English’ accents were horribly inaccurate and regularly inconsistent. With only 1-2 American characters voiced whilst the rest are all English or overtly nondescript, this choice made zero sense to me.

I tried so hard to stick this out. But in the end the trauma was simply too much to bear.
