Publisher's Summary

A troubled young mother yearns for a shot at redemption in this heartbreaking yet hopeful story from #1 New York Times bestselling author Colleen Hoover.

After serving five years in prison for a tragic mistake, Kenna Rowan returns to the town where it all went wrong, hoping to reunite with her four-year-old daughter. But the bridges Kenna burned are proving impossible to rebuild. Everyone in her daughter’s life is determined to shut Kenna out, no matter how hard she works to prove herself.

The only person who hasn’t closed the door on her completely is Ledger Ward, a local bar owner and one of the few remaining links to Kenna’s daughter. But if anyone were to discover how Ledger is slowly becoming an important part of Kenna’s life, both would risk losing the trust of everyone important to them.

The two form a connection despite the pressure surrounding them, but as their romance grows, so does the risk. Kenna must find a way to absolve the mistakes of her past in order to build a future out of hope and healing.

Critic Reviews

“Narrators Brittany Pressley and Ryan West depict a story of triumph in a hopeless situation.… The audiobook has excellent pacing and gives equal attention to the relationships among Kenna, Ledger, and Diem. Pressley so expertly illustrates Kenna's desperation that listeners will hope for her redemption. While the two narrators have opposite approaches, West as gruff Ledger and Pressley as wilted Kenna, they complement each other as the audiobook progresses.”AudioFile Magazine

“The narration of Hoover's novel is split between Kenna's and Ledger's perspectives, skillfully brought to life in the audiobook by Brittany Pressley and Ryan West. A contemporary romance with wide appeal. Hoover's novel realistically depicts reactions to heartache, and the narrators' performances underscore the relatability of her characters.”Library Journal

“Hoover delves deep into grief and guilt to create a multifaceted redemption story for a cast of characters who fight as fiercely as they love. Fans won’t be disappointed.”Publishers Weekly

Cheesy

Two-dimensional characters and a storyline that could have worked on Days of Our Lives. No idea how this has been rated so highly. Brittany's performance was annoying, she always sounded like everything was just....so....haaaaaaard. I understand the character is going through an awful time, but the OTT performance was grating.

Cringe!

Maybe if I was 18? Maybe not! Written so poorly, so many unrealistic moments and the ending blah! Cringe with each chapter. Did not connect to narrators one bit.

I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes. Disappointed.

DNF - made it to chapter 4.

I really wanted to like it and found the storyline intriguing but just couldn’t keep rolling my eyes at some of the cringe-worthy lines. The voices didn’t seem to work for me either and helped with the cringey nature of the words. I gave up though and it’s rare that I do not finish a book.

Top 3 worst lines (approx quotes):
“Her face is a work of art. I wish there was a picture of it hanging on a wall in a museum somewhere so I could stand in front of it and stare at it for as long as I wanted."

"There was a war in his eyes, and I am by no means Switzerland, but he comes to me anyway.”

“I felt like a snake in that moment, but I didn’t feel like slithering away.”

I loved ‘verity’ (very different style) and still want to read ‘it ends with us,’ but this one disappointed me.

Not great but not terrible…

Haven’t finished listening yet…. I am struggling with the voice actors and find them hard to listen to.

Story had glimmers of good. So far it’s pretty mediocre.

Was hoping for more….

over dramatised and predictable

very predictable. The male voice sounds like a radio host and is very distracted and the female character seemed to do nothing except ask herself questions.

Dual vocals

Loved the book so persisted, but it was so off putting having the female voice the male character in her perspective chapters and vice versa. When the male/female were speaking, it should have been their voices rather than a put on voice.

Somehow wholesome while genuinely heart wrenching - Refreshingly nontoxic male characters really stood out.

Wonderfully written and performed. My only disappointment was that I was hoping to hear ‘based on a true story’ at the end, not for the tragedy, but for how each character processed it. The characters were simultaneously so believable while incredibly aspirational for how humans should be.

Well written book

I’ve read all of Colleen Hoover’s books and am a huge fan of her style of writing. This particular book did not disappoint and held true to her writing style. The plot was solid, the characters were very relatable and the overall storytelling process was well-done. If you are a Colleen Hoover fan or just looking for a good book to start reading from her, this is a good start. There of course is tragedy in the book as there is in almost all of her books, but this one had a good sense of hope that keeps you reading. Overall enjoyable read.

Oh my weary heart..

Well, It’s a little hard to see what I am typing through the tears that have been flowing out of my eyes for the past two hours but what an emotional and incredible journey that Colleen Hoover just took me on. I am not sure how it’s possible but I feel like the learning curve I was exposed to of loss and perception in this book has helped shape my mind a little. Thank you Colleen Hoover! ❤️❤️

Colleen Hoover does it again!

I inhaled this book the day it was released and couldn’t stop listening. I was moved to tears several times, and loved the way the author builds up the tension of the story by trickling details of the characters lives out slowly.

The narrators have an excellent performance and brought the story to life. I can’t wait for Hoover’s next book.

Not for me I’m afraid

The narrators were really good and I actually didn’t mind them both doing different characters, which is quite rare in audio books!

I’d recommend this book for young readers

I try as much as I can to relate and understand characters stories, (even when I don’t agree with their actions as it’s a character and not me!!) the relationship between Kenner and her daughter and Scotties parents were just silly.

As if a mother who according to her own letters to her dead ex, just wants to be in her daughters life would allow some man she’s sleeping with to tell her what’s she can and can’t do in regards to her own baby or the dead exes parents either. Just too wish washy

I feel the book was just about Kenner and her finding love and no thought was realistically put into the relationship of a mother and daughter she had with her dead boyfriend that was taken away from her

Characters were quite hard to warm to

This book had such great reviews and I’ve read a few other Colleen hoover books but unfortunately didn’t love this one. It jumped quite quickly into the characters relationship and didn’t give much time to warm to the characters
