Im Jahr 1642 gehört Rembrandt zu den erfolgreichsten Künstlern seiner Zeit. Trotzdem sind einige seiner Auftraggeber skeptisch - zum Beispiel die 34 Männer der Schützenkompanie. Als Rembrandt die Mitglieder der Kompanie für eine erste Studie des Bildes empfängt, gehen die Vorstellungen darüber wie der Maler die Männer abbilden soll ziemlich auseinander. Gar nicht so einfach diesen Haufen eitler Herren zu besänftigen. "Lass mich mal da hin!" "Drängel doch nicht so!" "Stell dich einfach ruhig hin." Doch gerade das möchte Rembrand nicht. Nichts findet er langweiliger als Bilder, auf denen die Menschen einfach nebeneinander abgebildet sind. Auf seinen Bildern sollen sich spannende Szenen abspielen. "Drama bitte, Drama!" ermutigt er die Männer zu mehr Lebhaftigkeit.
