Publisher's Summary

This landmark collection is the definitive introduction to the Buddha's teachings - in his own words. The American scholar-monk Bhikkhu Bodhi, whose voluminous translations have won widespread acclaim, here presents selected discourses of the Buddha from the Pali Canon, the earliest record of what the Buddha taught. Divided into 10 thematic chapters, In the Buddha's Words reveals the full scope of the Buddha's discourses, from family life and marriage to renunciation and the path of insight. A concise, informative introduction precedes each chapter, guiding the listener toward a deeper understanding of the texts that follow.

In the Buddha's Words allows even listeners unacquainted with Buddhism to grasp the significance of the Buddha's contributions to our world heritage. Taken as a whole, these texts bear eloquent testimony to the breadth and intelligence of the Buddha's teachings, and point the way to an ancient, yet ever-vital path. Students and seekers alike will find this systematic presentation indispensable.

Essential book for Buddhists

Much gratitude to Bhikkhu Bodhi for his translation and then collating this very well thought out anthology of the Buddhist suttas. Essential guide for those interested in Buddhism and deepening one's spiritual practice. Would have preferred a narrator who could pronounce the Pali words like Jhana.

amazing! for fans of the pali canon!

Amazing selection of suttas from the pali canon, phenomenal translations that bring the historical Buddha’s words to light in ways i’ve never experienced, Bikkhu Bodhi is the greatest living translator of the buddhist pali canon, being able to hear his work is a profound blessing to all of us on the path. Bikkhu Bodhi’s commentary on the suttas is profound and illuminating. Also amazing narration, paced well so one can truly take these profound words deep into their heart-mind. This is a relatively hardcore dhamma book so it’s understandable that others have found it difficult to understand but if you are already on the path and wish to deepen your knowledge and practice then this book will undoubtedly helps you tremendously as it has helped me. It is primarily translations of Suttas, so if you’re ready to approach Theravadan Buddhism from its earliest inceptions you are going to love this. Bikkhu Bodhi creates a structure for the dhamma that is novel and incredibly useful in seeing the entire dhamma.
I am just about to go on a month long silent meditation retreat and listening to this amazing selection of suttas will be an invaluable resource for me to draw upon as i deepen my practice.
Thankyou Bikkhu Bodhi, thankyou wisdom publications.

I like the in descendant order of the Buddha!

I like the titles in descendant order of the Buddha way's. I like the mind spoken tradition towards the practice (much emphasis in the native but in Bikkhu Bodhi's English speech form). I like how it confirms to me the history of the then and now intelligently.

Excellent set of summary texts and narration.

Highly recommended for a starting point for the original teachings of the Buddha, and an overall summary. I really liked the narration as well, top job.

The narration ruined it for me

I have great respect for Bhikkhu Bodhi's work, but could not get into this because of the narration. I made several attempts. Whilst the English is very clearly enunciated, the narrator's voice is flat and uninteresting.
This work is littered with Pali terms with which the narrator seems to be completely unfamiliar. As a result they are often pronounced haltingly and erratically. It seems to me a clear lack of research on the narrator's part, a 'good enough' approach.
I'm sure for others none of the above will be a problem, but for me I'm going to buy a hard edition.

Complete gobbledegook

Repetitive incoherent nonsense. Maybe it’s the translation but this book makes no sense at all. Maybe that’s Buddhism or maybe just this book.
