Eine Trennung von Staat und Kirche, wie wir sie in modernen säkularisierten Gesellschaften kennen, war im 16. Jahrhundert unbekannt. Religiöse Ereignisse hatten damit per se Einfluss auf die Politik und die Gesellschaft. Aus dieser Sicht stellt die Reformation ein Epochenereignis dar, das weit über den engeren theologischen Ereigniszusammenhang hinausweist. Markiert sie also tatsächlich eine Zeitenwende.
