Publisher's Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of the Gray Man series comes a startlingly realistic novel of World War III.

A desperate Kremlin takes advantage of a military crisis in Asia to simultaneously strike into Western Europe and invade east Africa in a bid to occupy three rare Earth mineral mines that will give Russia unprecedented control over the world's hi-tech sector for generations to come.

Pitted against the Russians are a Marine lieutenant colonel pulled out of a cushy Pentagon job, a French Special Forces captain and his intelligence operative father, a young Polish partisan fighter, an A-10 Warthog pilot, and the commander of an American tank platoon who, along with his German counterpart, fight from behind enemy lines.

Through grand land, sea, and air battles to a small unit fighting hand-to-hand in the jungle, Russia and the US face off in a terrifying but thrilling battle for world dominance - with constant the threat of a Russian nuclear detonation ever present.

Excellent listen!

This is the best military audiobook I have listened to in a long time. It is rare for a military audiobook to get down into detail and strategy, and also have an excellent plot. This audiobook delivers. I just wish I could have listened to this audiobook on a cross country drive instead of to and from work.

Russkies Go Home

If you like fictional "What If" war stories such as Tom Clancy's RED STORM RISING or SWORDPOINT,.....................
A good story teller Mark Greaney combines with an expert Military advisor Lieutenant Colonel Hunter Ripley Raulings USMC to create a real page turner of a Military novel. Could it happen ?? Maybe....Maybe not.But if it did [or something like it] the tactics and state of the art weapons systems could be utilized as described.
In a nutshell that and a great story is it's appeal. In fact there is so much there I will listen to it again in a few weeks and enjoy it just as much. Listening to Red Metal for 21 hours and 21 minutes.it seemed to pass very quickly.
Probably more of a guy book but there are strong believable female warrior characters for women that might enjoy a good Tom Clancy novel. This would make for a Great Beach book.

The narrator is very good

I understand that this type of book will be like this. All shooting, blowing up, killing whatever.
I think the author does a good job, but it is really a lot of hours of the same thing. I need more story, I guess. I let this book run through the whole thing, but all the battles are the same, so 3 hours later, that is still going on. 21 hrs .....and the narrator is still on a roll

Outstanding! Worth waiting for!

Mark Greaney is already at the top of authors of espionage thrillers. With this long and very complex military thriller he excels with a different genre. Setting up the various parts of RED METAL requires some time, but the listener should stick with the book to be rewarded by an outstanding novel. Marc Vietor's narration is superb.

A true heir to Tom Clancy.

In the tradition of Clancy's early novels. The story reflects the detail and flavor of modern war/politics.

aweful

Of all the books I have listened to this will be my first review. it was just so bad. i was so excited too after listening to all the gray man series. it's not like I didn't really give it a try. I made it through the first 8 hours. painfully. the story is so painstakingly detailed it is more like reading an encyclopedia. and the performance is probably worse than the story. his cadence is so irritating. he talks clearly then always goes into this rough sounding voice and ends with a weird uptick as if asking a question. nonstop. every sentence. I have never quit a book, even though a few I wanted to....this one was just too much for me to handle.

Wanted to like it, Very poor Performance

I really wanted to like the book. Just cannot get into it, does not even keep me awake. I'm exactly 1/2 way and I know what is happening, but have little interest in finishing. This is very unusual for me, normally I cannot wait to finish the books.

Narrator is grating on my nerves with the over emphasis on the last 1 or 2 words of every sentence and the pregnant pauses between EVERY sentence. Sounds like those foreign correspondents on CNN with the roller coaster cadence to their speech - I hate it. It does not enhance dramatic affect and is just irritating and detracts from the story. I think more about how I hate the delivery than I do about the action in the book - not good.

I'm going to give the book on more hour and if I'm not hooked it will be goodbye Red Metal. I love Mark Greaney's other books, this is sub-par at best.

implausible

i really liked mark greaney before this book, and was really looking forward to this book. but it is so unreasonable in it's understanding of europe and Africa, and just how they work. it doesn't even seem to have done any research on NATO QRF forces, who they are, what they are, and what they do. what about Britain, was she just sitting there doing nothing!!!

Superb !

An excellent listen. Great plot and very well read. Reminds me very much of Tom Clancy at his very best. Like the ending which nicely sets up a sequel. If you like this type of book then I highly recommend Red Metal.

Modern Day Combat at its best!

The depth of knowledge that has gone in to writing this book is apparent in every chapter!
Great characters, with such depth and links it will have you hooked from the start!
I bought this as a modern day Red Storm Rising! It’s so much more!
One downside was the lack of British support! A glaring omission from the book! British Force have a presence in every theatre included in this book!

Absolutely Brilliant

If you enjoyed Red Storm Rising you will love this. Shame the British are left out if the story. I hope the sequel will be along soon.
Thoroughly recommend.

Great yarn

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Full of action & tactics. My favourite read is Tom Clancy’s Red Storm Rising and this is in the same ballpark. Not as detailed but certainly a great story.

I shall look forward to the follow up up cos that’ll be coming for sure.

Excellent story - inspired me to write a review

I'm not one for writing reviews, as I feel that audiobook choice is a very individual one. I was aware of Mark Greany as an author in the Tom Clancy series and I have enjoyed the books he wrote. This is the first time I have purchased one of his own works, and I'm very impressed. The action is fast paced, the characters and plot are entirely believable. Searching for an analogy, this book is very similar to Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy.

If you like the smell of diesel and gunsmoke in your nostrils, give Red Metal a try - you won't be disappointed.

Concentrate on the story

A great audio book. Be aware the story can flit easily especially with the who’s doing what. Once into the story then it’s just a matter of timing your meal breaks and work. You don’t want to leave it

Epic

I put getting this off for a long time because I didn't like the narrator in the sample clip. However I'm a massive fan of the Gray Man series so I took a chance.
I am so happy I did. The narrator turned out to be perfect for the part and the story is an epic one.
Hopefully this is the start of something special.
