Enjoyed these Mick Herron books very much. I think it is fair to say that the author reached a wonderful, and humorous zenith with the Slow Horses and I am looking forward to more. But these earlier works have much to recommend them.

A well crafted tale

A really enjoyable read - lovely Mick Herron plot that links into the Slough House narrative but has plenty all on its own. Very well read too.

Great plot - plenty to keep you guessing!

Takes its time but actually builds nicely to a wonderful climax. A didn’t book but still the same Herron style. Ending leaves the reader in the seat of deciding what happens. I’d have liked a bit more certainty there

Solid

The narrator does male voices in a style I find annoying and distracting. Put aside the string of plot elements that are not believable and it’s a pleasant yarn. Lacks the punchy dialogue of Slough Horses and also somewhat predictable plot twists.

Slow Horses Not but still good

Mick Herron is a wonderful author, I love all of his work, but I'm going to hold off getting more books of his until there is a version with a different narrator. This narrator makes consistently strange choices on which words to accentuate, what voices to give people, and performs like she's reading a bedtime story for toddlers instead of narrating an adult novel. Instead of narrating she's story-telling, add to that the strange cadence choices and she honestly sounds like AI making strange mistakes because it doesn't know how to human. Audiobooks are expensive, and the narrator making a purchase a failure is very disappointing. I hope the half of Mick Herron works narrated by the same author is redone. I don't even mind the mistakes they accidentally left in,but the narrator I can't get past.

An excellent book with unfortunate narration

Not the Herron I have come to love; slow and repetitive, The performance does it no favours but i don't think it is entirely to blame.

Disappointing

This book was not particularly exciting, in fact I almost gave up on it about half way through. Interesting account of how people react to frightening events but repetitive and ending weak.

Long and drawn out

Very slow, and the most overwrought reading performance I have ever heard . She is a shocker and absolutely ruined a semi - ok book. I couldnt finish because of her.

Very Disappointing

Tried several times, couldn’t get past the overacting of the narrator. Zero nuance and hard to listen to.
Story very slow to start, but may get better.

Terrible Narrator

Very disappointed sadly by this book - at first I thought I was just missing the usual narrator but this was sluggish and though it had moments where it looked like it was taking off it never really did. Not sure if it might have been better to read than listen to but the writing didn’t come across as strong as his usual work.

Not in the same league as the Slow Horses series
