Story
Cade and his band of bodacious companions have forged a foothold in the world of Antinium, and now they must defend it. A dungeon with seven levels of increasing difficulty waits to be explored. Invaluable resources, and more importantly, the power to control the dungeon itself, stands as more than an enticing reward to lure Cade in. The beasts of Antinium have mutated and turned from a nuisance into a full-scale threat. But most concerning of all is the evil that festers in the darkness.

Sebastian Frost was a man with an interesting reputation. He’d killed 12 giants, eight heroes, a duke, and even a prince. But nobody ever talked about any of that. All they talked about was the deviant, disgusting, detestable Herald of Shalia that shamelessly laid with elves. That was because in the strange world based on game mechanics Frost found himself in, laying with elves was somehow treated like laying with animals. It’s been four months since I defeated Ivan Grozny, King of the Nightlords. He ran off with his tail tucked between his legs, and no one has seen anything of the Nightlords since. The Dragon’s Hoard has not remained idle. Two of my mates are days away from giving birth to my children, and I’ve been slowly expanding and perfecting my base while hunting interlopers. I’m starting to think the Nightlords won’t be showing up again, but if there’s one thing about vampires, it’s that they’re hard to put down for good. Myself included.

Sebastian Frost’s most recent memory was waking up in a field naked, in a body that wasn’t his own, in a world that definitely wasn’t his own, and three stunning pointy-eared women staring right at him. He also remembered hair as white as starlight, eyes like amethysts, and the name Shalia. Fortunately, it was the right name to know. Shalia was the elves’ goddess, and that made him her herald.

Good narration and story premise but bad character
Books great if you like the cheesy harems with poorly detailed characters who's body is metioned more than their personalities. The MC is also rather obnoxious as hes horny 24/7. The characters also jump from the complete strangers to close friends and or lovers is kinda off putting. Good if you are just looking for jerk material though.

The narrator tried, but couldn't save this book
I love Boucher's voice, but there's honestly nothing he could have done better to save this book for me.
An ex soldier that gets queazy at the sight of a butchered animal carcass... who performs in a fight as well as an office worker that's never seen combat... and who's about as canny an operator as a dull stone.
These kinds of protagonists can work (though they're not for me), but don't bloody give them a background that makes their incompetence nonsensical.
I didn't finish. Didn't want to, tbh.

Was just Ok,
Minor Spoilers,
I have many issues with this book. It started out good with a focus on leveling up and getting stronger. Then when he realized he must get stronger to defeat the protagonist/antagonist he stopped leveling. Honestly did he even gain a level during the second half of the book?
The second issue was the last sex scene. During most of the book the MC only has sex with one character. These scenes are pretty long and descriptive. Now when he finally has sex with the other character its mainly him having an inner dialog of the past and whats to come. The first time should be special with a focus on that scene. The other scenes after the first can be quicker and not as detailed but not the first time.
Frankly the lack of focus the MC has in pleasing the beast girl is a major turn off. The MC made a comment I wonder how she taste. At anytime the MC could have focused on her pleasure but it was always about his pleasure with the beast girl. It just gives men a bad image. Additionally I hate peer pressure and the beast girl won't stop pressuring the other woman into joining. She even puts down the MC to try to convince her to join. In a lot of ways the MC is an Alpha male type but not when it comes to women. When dealing with the women he turns into a Beta allowing them to belittle and dictate much of the relationship. Sorry but in polygamist relationship, rather its 1 male and many women or 1 woman and many men the 1 needs to be the Alpha or the relationship will never work.
I'm not sure if I'll continue with this series. In an environment like this one there should be much more fighting, especially given the MC's class. It has the starts of a harem but not really a harem in this book. It has the potential to be a good book but just falls short.

This story was very original. I liked the setting and the different angle on dying and going to another world. The characters were great! Really well done.
The narration was absolutely amazing. Jessica and Christopher did a fantastic job.

Enjoyed this after having read it already.
Second time through a book you sometimes get a better appreciation for aspects of it that you missed the first time. I would say that is especially true when the second time through is a different mode.
This author presents the struggles of a military man. The MC is one who is both prepared and accustomed to violence and war but at the same time has no love for it and would prefer a life of peace. I remember reading somewhere that no one prays for peace as fervently as warriors. I think that is true of the MC, yet what I love about him is that he isn't willing to step up when he needs to.
He takes a stand for what is write and it shows in how he is written. If the author is half the man the Cade is then, I only wish I could buy him a beer.
Of course life isn't all easy for Cade. The enemy he is faced with is overwhelming. He could easily give up but doesn't. He struggles on and finds a way through. He gets a unique and powerful class but it doesn't put him onto the path to easy mode. Quite to the contrary he often learns from his companions how much he has to learn about the new world he is in.
On the other hand life, isn't all bad for him. The cover alone shows you some of the perks of the new life that he finds himself in.
In short, this is a fun, fast paced story, that doesn't preach at you but still has characters who have a backbone for doing right.

More RPG than Harem
If your a fan of RPG and harem fantasies you should give this one try. It has the prerequisites of a struggling hero trying to overcome his past. There are the strong yet equally beast-kin feminine support, as well as the menacing megalomaniac looking for dominance.

What???
I love science fiction fantasy. It is one of my favorite genres to listen to. This is a horrible story for my money. Heard all but the last 40 minutes of it and realized that not only did I not care, but I had not one ounce of invested emotion in the characters. The performance by the narrators is stellar and I noticed that the only emotion I had in the story was the pity I felt for them... I guess a paycheck is a paycheck. I would pass this by, having not read nor heard any of the other works by Atlas Kane, I can not attest to his other works, but this is a shallow story with an ingenious concept to is void of all true character development except for maybe one character, who is not even the main one. The main character seems like a cross between a military version of Jack Burton and Deadpool. Sounds funny if nothing else, but rest assured it is not after 10 hours.

Hated it...
MC is a weak pushover.
The first girl MC becomes interested in is a sex slave of the bad guy, or at least I assume so, didn't get far enough to confirm or deny that.
The bad guy is the most perfect male specimen to ever exist, physically But he is an annoying megalomaniac who is extremely powerful and he immediately hates MC and tries to get him killed.
There is a bunch of hints towards sexual abuse/torture/slavery, and I plain don't like that.
The only good thing about this book if you don't count the narrators who do an outstanding job, is that the book decided to be awful right from the start, so I don't have to listen to 10h only to get disappointed later...

fantastic story, brilliantly narrated
first off - i'm a veteran. so to get the first point out of the way- Atlas really tells a believable tale of someone suffering ptsd and handling lingering fears.
second the world and how its constructed is compelling and draws you in. the characters are fun and the protagonist comes across as competent but not super capable - he struggles but doesnt make idiotic moves like other protags. he also makes use of his discoveries, never conveniently forgetting them to artifically ramp up the drama.
this is a great intro to the conflict, resolves a few of the struggles that the story sets out but leaves the larger arc ready to progress.
narration is fantastic, both actors really giving life to the different characters.
ive already bought the other two books after listening to this.

Just a really good story
As a gamelit story, this works really well, the game mechanics work well and the action is well done. The harem side if the book is also good, it's slow burn and so feels part of the story. The characters have depth, with the female ones being strong women who can stand side by side with the mc. The narrators both do a fantastic job. At the end of the book the author gives us a nice personal insight to the origins of the story. Highly recommended.
