About this listen

From the best-selling author of Seven Brief Lessons on Physics comes a new audiobook about the mind-bending nature of the universe.

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Reality Is Not What It Seems by Carlo Rovelli, read by Roy McMillan.

What are time and space made of? Where does matter come from? And what exactly is reality?

Scientist Carlo Rovelli has spent his whole life exploring these questions and pushing the boundaries of what we know. Here he explains how our image of the world has changed throughout centuries. From Aristotle to Albert Einstein, Michael Faraday to the Higgs boson, he takes us on a wondrous journey to show us that beyond our ever-changing idea of reality is a whole new world that has yet to be discovered.

The book starts with poetry and concepts from ancient knowledge and evolve to modern physics. The concept explained and elaborate beautifully and effortlessly. The language and the vivid descriptions used to describe quantum gravity and associated phenomenons are fascinating. I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in physics.

An amazing write up about the fabric of everything

A very basic discussion of an immensely complex topic. An enjoyable book written by a humble genius.

A complex topic well written

Not only important for its effective and layered delivery of the discoveries of science, but more so for the framework of thinking it encourages the reader to hold. This framework is vitally important today. Thank you, Carlo.

A very important book!

Professor Rovelli has the gifted knack of explaining to the uninitiated the story of the world’s existence with clarity and conciseness.
For those of us bemused by the irregular appearance in the media of scientific breakthroughs, that are becoming more and more obtuse, he has done us a great service.
A question related to the primary point in his ultimate Chapter 13: Is the science of climate change and global warming ‘settled’?

A master story teller

A wonderful telling of the history and origins of modern scientific thought through to current theories and the speculative.

It rare to hear science written about with such prose. Loved it!

Beautifully written and delivered

A brain bending ramble through existence and the role of science. Definitely worth listening through a few times.

Illuminating

I will confess to mentally grasping at some of the theoretical concepts in this book but it is so beautifully worded and read that those moments are easily surpassed by the shear joy of the scientific discoveries explained by this author and his generously shared love of physics and the pursuit of knowledge.

Bewildering and fantastic

Had to listen two times to a couple of characters to digest the magnificence of the ideas

It actually changed how i see the world
