About this listen

Everything had a price. Especially the truth.

Former Marine Atlas Kinkaid knows not to ask questions about the clients he protects at the behest of the elite Whitethorn security agency. Just like he doesn't like anyone asking about his scars - scars left by a mysterious attack that haunts his every waking moment.

Consumed by the need to find out what happened to him, Atlas takes a job providing security to Cristian Slava, the indolent - and gorgeous - son of a notorious businessman. Cristian seems to be just another entitled client, but when nights at the club turn into secret meetings and people start going missing, Atlas realizes there's more to Cristian - and to protecting him - than meets the eye.

But the same people who are after Cristian have something Atlas desperately craves: They know exactly what happened the fateful night he was attacked-and are willing to tell him everything....

I admit I didn’t have high hopes for this book but it was great! Initially, I wasn’t a big fan of Christian, but once he dropped the bratty stuff I really warmed to him.

I thought the narrator was really good also. He managed to do different voices for each of the various characters although the patriarch’s Dracula style voice was slightly over the top.

Surprisingly good

Story was enjoyable and a good start to a series but John Solo’s
“Romanian” accent was horrible.

Ex-marine Atlas Kinkaid still suffers aftereffects of the fanged attacker that ended his military career. These days he works security for the Whitethorn Agency, his sister’s company. He has his work cut out for him providing personal protection to Cristian Slava, the brattish, entitled son of a notorious Romanian businessman but slowly over time Atlas and Cristian learn to respect each other, though they steadfastly ignore the other growing feelings. When Atlas learns that Cristian and his family are vampires, he is initially horrified and seeks the help of an opposing group, but soon finds it hard to know who to trust.

I came to this after reading MA Grant’s fabulous Darkest Court trilogy. I don’t think this quite measures up but it’s very enjoyable all the same. There’s a satisfying slow reveal of information about this world of vampires and it’s a nice change to find vampires that seem to have a lot of almost human vulnerabilities. Speaking of slow, Atlas and Cristian have a very slowburn romance and their eventual affection is hard won. Being the first in a trilogy, this ends fairly abruptly with very little resolved so be prepared for that—I’m here for the long haul so wasn’t worried about it. The only real fly in my ointment was Atlas’s big paralysing predicament which seemed to have plenty of solutions … I had to suspend a lot of disbelief to accept that an experienced military mind couldn’t sort this pretty easily! 🎧 Veteran voice actor John Solo gave another stellar audio performance (currently free on the Audible Plus catalogue)!
