Publisher's Summary

Arimnestos of Plataea was one of the heroes of the Battle of Marathon, in which the heroic Greeks halted the invading Persians in their tracks, and fought in the equally celebrated naval battle at Salamis.

But even these stunning victories only served to buy the Greeks time, as the Persians gathered a new army, returning with overwhelming force to strike the final killing blow.

For the Greeks, divided and outnumbered, there was only one possible strategy: attack. And so, in the blazing summer of 479 BC, Arimnestos took up his spear one final time at the Battle of Plataea.

Wow...Gobsmackingly Good!

This series is a true gem. Every book better than the last and a look at a story often told is hard to get that. The narration was perfect, the story as brutal as it us complex. Like an excellent vintage scotch, I think you need to have cut your teeth on lesser versions to appreciate its quality. Christian Cameron is the real Top Shelf of the genre. Bravo!

A satisfying ending to one of my new favourites!

I just hope at some point Christian comes back and writes a few more books following the adventures of Arimnestos of Platea. An absolute gem of a series.

This type of strategic description of the fights , yet believable characters is exactly what I look for in historical fiction.

The Long War Series-A Masterpiece

It takes a lot to make a great audiobook, much less a series of great ones. You have to have an excellent author and a talented narrator. It’s infrequent that I come upon any audiobook that the two work so well together. Peter Noble is handily one of the best narrators I have ever listened to, and the long war series written by Cameron was a beautiful portrait of Ancient Greece. I immensely enjoyed this series, and if you are a lover of history and adventure, this is a must read.

Tremendous saga

This is an incredible telling of an amazing saga. The authorship is wonderful and the reader is exceptionally good. Not tired of listening, even after the completion of the long series. Highly recommended.

Reviews were correct. As good as the Uthred series, which I consider high praise indeed.

A Thoroughly Researched Masterpiece

It’s sad to end an incredible saga. Christian Cameron’s writing is emotional and vivid, and I feel educated without being ‘spoon fed’. (Students studying Herodotus would enjoy and learn I feel). Further to this the stellar and consistent performance of peter noble makes it feel more like theatre in your head rather than a standard audiobook. Superb all round!

Great series

Great series, I thoroughly enjoyed all six books. I suggest looking at ancient maps to understand the geography, it helps to get the story in your head as it’s been told.

tears

of joy and sadness, an epic worthy of the best in literature, terrific writing, that as an owner of over 250 historical novels I can say Christian Cameron is no.1, hopefully audible takes tyrant next and peter noble tells the tale in his masterful way, and maybe one day arimnestos will tell the tales of the epilogue.
