Protagonista dell’intrigo poliziesco, il commissario don Ciccio, alle prese con un groviglio di indizi, piste false e sospetti. Apparso a puntate su "Letteratura" nel 1946-47, il romanzo di Gadda uscì in volume nel 1957, ottenendo subito un’enorme risonanza, a tal punto da suscitare allo scrittore l’esclamazione: "Sono diventato una specie di Lollobrigido, di Sofio Loren".
