Publisher's Summary

From the best-selling author of The Keeper of Lost Things and The Wisdom of Sally Red Shoes - a novel of mothers and daughters, families and secrets and the astonishing power of friendship.

Tilly was a bright, outgoing little girl who liked playing with ghosts and matches.

She loved fizzy drinks, swear words, fish fingers and Catholic churches, but most of all she loved living in Brighton in Queenie Malone's magnificent Paradise Hotel, with its endearing and loving family of misfits - staff and guests alike.

But Tilly's childhood was shattered when her mother sent her away from the only home she'd ever loved to boarding school with little explanation and no warning.

Now, Tilda has grown into an independent woman still damaged by her mother's unaccountable cruelty. Wary of people, her only friend is her dog, Eli. But when her mother dies, Tilda goes back to Brighton and, with the help of her beloved Queenie, sets about unravelling the mystery of her exile from The Paradise Hotel and discovers that her mother was not the woman she thought she knew at all....

Mothers and daughters...their story can be complicated...it can also turn out to have a happy ending.

Entranced from the beginning to the end

I normally listen to crimes and thrillers but occasionally I like to have some easy listening , this is just that . Like all Ruth Hogan books they take you away on a journey .Great listen on a long journey or while gardening.

A TOTAL DELIGHT

I haven’t forgotten how much I enjoyed The Keeper of Lost Things & didn’t believe Queenie Malone could be as good - it is & I recommend it wholeheartedly. Ruth Hogan is able to deal with serious subject matter with clarity & compassion. Her characters are real, their warmth & humour as well as sadness combines to make this a wonderful ‘read’ I could go on & on & on...

Rushed ending

Ruth Hogan spends many pages using strong and descriptive narrative to colour in fully, character, time and place and builds a great story but somehow towards the end of the book she seems to become distracted and the tight storytelling runs out of ink, leaving me slightly irritated with the lacklustre end.

Beautiful

A delightful, moving, laugh out loud story, beautifully told. The narrator was superb and when it was Tilly it was like listening to a child. A story you where the characters were colourful and believable 5 out of 5 stars definitely

quietly comforting

Well, depending on ones circumstances this book may appeal or not. For me, in lockdown where time is of no consequence it became my afternoon friend. Brilliant use of misappropriations and misunderstood words by a child add some humour. There was little clue to how the story would end. Left a little short and could have included the paralell life of 'Stevie' bit weighty on the mother's story. bit if balance needed. The sequel - Dad's pub.
