About this listen
One of George Bernard Shaw's best known plays, Pygmalion was a rousing success on the London and New York stages which also became an entertaining motion picture and a great hit with its musical version, My Fair Lady.
In this Audible Original dramatisation Stephen Fry stars as phonetics expert Professor Henry Higgins who takes on a bet that in a matter of months he can transform cockney flower seller Eliza Doolittle, played by Daisy Edgar Jones, into a woman as poised and well-spoken as a duchess.
Shaw’s tale of love and the class system is performed by Tia Bannon, Tallulah Bond, Joanna David Daisy Edgar-Jones, Stephen Fry, Tom Glenister, Celia Imrie, Sir Derek Jacobi and Timothy Spall.

A good quality production of a dated story
Overall I enjoyed this piece. The well known actors and sound effects worked well in conjuring a specific time and place. It is hard to hear how Eliza is belittled controlled and condemned as worthless. Yet within these dated misogynist classist values we see Eliza standing up to her "betters" and fighting for her independence. There is a second track after the play explaining a summary of what happens in their later life.
