Eigentlich wollten Jobst und seine Mutter auf dem Heimweg von ihrem Mittelalter-Urlaub bloß eine Pullerpause im Jahr 1987 einlegen. Aber dann ist ihr Zeitreisekoffer plötzlich verschwunden und die beiden hängen fest - mitten in der DDR. Ein Land, das Jobst nur aus Erzählungen kennt. Kinder heißen hier Pioniere, im Obst- und Gemüseladen gibt es keine Südfrüchte, sondern das, was gerade da ist, und das Staatsoberhaupt kommt Jobst auch sehr seltsam vor. Doch ohne Koffer keine Heimreise! Und so macht sich Jobst gemeinsam mit seinen neu gewonnenen Freunden auf die Suche. Natürlich führt das zu allerlei Turbulenzen - samt einer etwas unglücklichen Begegnung mit dem Staatsratsvorsitzenden.
