About this listen

When the witch built the 40-flight tower, she made very sure to do the whole thing properly. Each flight contains a dreadful monster, ranging from a diamond-scaled dragon to a pack of slavering goblins. Should a prince battle his way to the top, he will be rewarded with a golden sword - and the lovely Princess Floralinda.

But no prince has managed to conquer the first flight yet, let alone get to the 40th.

In fact, the supply of fresh princes seems to have quite dried up.

I don’t think I’ve ever enjoyed a story so much. Only complaint is that it’s too short!

Brilliant and delightful

Some books dictate the terms of the relationship, defined by teen angst, teen humour, teen longings or worse by adult angst, adult humour and adult longings.

This book, evidence of Tamsyn Muirs’ particularly unique form of genius was the most enjoyable outing my inner child has had for some time.

The narrator Moira Quirk could no doubt read a telephone directory and it would sound ace but the real strength is Moiras’ regard and sympathy for the subtext in all of Tamsyns’ works I’ve now read.

I will be giving this book to my ten year old daughter in a year or two (or more likely next week), and hoping she reads it sooner rather than later because the hero of this story, both of them, are the sorts of people I hope my daughter imbibes her strengths from.

As a child, for me, it was Ursula Le Guin, for my daughter, I think a changed world makes it appropriate that it is the turn of writers like Tamsyn Muir who feed the minds of the new generations.

I throughly enjoyed this story. What else needs to be said?

A humorous fairytale with a fun bastardization arc. From classic to gore, one might say. I definitely recommend the audiobook; it was fantastic.

I laughed aloud within the first five minutes. This story is perfectly narrated, hilarious (if this sort of humour tickles you), and just a general blast. I will read anything Tamsyn Muir writes and if it's narrated by Moira Quirk, all the better!

Absolutely delightful from start to finish

A great novella in true Tamsyn Muir style. Female led queer characters who discover their power and journey from victim to perpetrator.

Darkly funny and subversive
