In a darkened room a young man sits telling the macabre and eerie story of his life - the story of a vampire, gifted with eternal life, cursed with an exquisite craving for human blood. Demonstrating once again her gift for spellbinding storytelling, Anne Rice makes real for us a great dynasty of four centuries of witches - a family given to poetry and incest, murder and philosophy, a family that over the ages is itself haunted by a powerful, dangerous, and seductive being called Lasher who haunts the Mayfair women. Moving in time from today's New Orleans and San Francisco to long-ago Amsterdam and the France of Louis XIV, from the coffee plantations of Port-au-Prince to Civil War New Orleans and back to today, Anne Rice has spun a mesmerizing tale.

Story
A Vampire Chronicles novella from the internationally best-selling Anne Rice. A vampire in the Italian age of gold... Sixteen years old, Vittorio is the sole survivor of a bizarre and violent massacre at his father's Tuscan palazzo. Escaping to the Florence of Cosimo de' Medici, he seeks vengeance and retribution. But though he has been saved from death by a mysterious woman, he finds himself at the mercy of demonic, bloody nightmares, war and political intrigue.
Publisher's Summary
The vampire world is in crisis – their kind have been proliferating out of control and, thanks to technologies undreamed of in previous centuries, they can communicate as never before.
Roused from their earth-bound slumber, ancient ones are in thrall to the Voice: which commands that they burn fledgling vampires in cities from Paris to Mumbai, Hong Kong to Kyoto and San Francisco. Immolations, huge massacres, have commenced all over the world.
Who – or what – is the Voice? What does it desire, and why? There is only one vampire, only one blood drinker, truly known to the entire world of the Undead. Will the dazzling hero-wanderer, the dangerous rebel-outlaw Lestat heed the call to unite the Children of Darkness as they face this new twilight?
Anne Rice’s epic, luxuriant, fiercely ambitious new novel brings together all the worlds and beings of the legendary Vampire Chronicles, from present-day New York and Ancient Egypt to fourth-century Carthage and Renaissance Venice; from Louis de Pointe du Lac; Armand the eternally young; Mekare and Maharet; to Pandora and Flavius; David Talbot, vampire and ultimate fixer from the Secret Talamasca; and Marius, the true child of the Millennia. It also introduces many other seductive supernatural creatures, and heralds significant new blood.

Great narrator for a mediocre story
Perhaps my personality has changed in the decade since I last read a Vampire Chronicle, but this book wasn't for me. At 18hrs, I felt it was far too long winded, and quite slow in parts, saved only by the excellent narrator.

Awestruck!
I truly can't think of a single criticism of this book, or of this performance. I have heard many books read by Simon Vance and he is consistently excellent. His subtle voice characterisations and his pace and tone are, to me, very easy to listen to.
The story continues one of which I've been a fan for a long time so any review by me will be heavily biased. It's hard to believe that these are not tales of people who actually exist. Anne Rice doesn't write 'characters', she writes histories. Profoundly attractive ones.
I enjoyed this immensely and I am sure I'll do so again before long.

Great Idea, Badly executed
I love the Vampire chronicles and most of Anne Rice's other books. I was eagerly awaiting this Vampire chronicle but was sorely disappointed. The idea for the story is good but the rambling incoherent path she takes to get to the half decent ending, is very dull and over written. Simon Vance's narration was difficult to understand at times and the accents he used for the characters were just bizarre. What a sad ending to the Great Vampire Chronicles.

An excellent read
An excellent read. you'll get the best out of the book if you read Lestat The Vampyre and Queen Of The Damned first. There are so many characters in the story it helps if you have been introduced to them before you read this book. Queen Akasha has a plan to take over the world by eliminating all the mortals and the fledgelings. Lestat is called upon by the elders to help prevent this from happening.

Back to form
I must admit by end of the original run of vampire chronicles I was getting a bit disappointed by the hybrid of Mayfair witches and vampire books . they didn't seem to meet my expectations as I had loved both series of books. This book has brought back the series with a great story. The mix of prospects from the all the vampires can get a little confusing but it is part of the reason I do like the books you see things from not just one view. I can't wait for more.

Not the best Anne Rice I've read
Would you recommend Prince Lestat to your friends? Why or why not?
I would recommend Prince Lestat to any fan of The Vampire Chronicles, but I don't think a non-fan would rate it at all.
Which character – as performed by Simon Vance – was your favourite?
Simon Vance is a great reader, I love his range of voices even though his Asian characters all sound like the shopkeeper from The Simpsons. The rest of his repertoire is fantastic as always.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Unlike Interview with the Vampire, The Vampire Lestat and Queen of the damned; I don't think I could do this audiobook in one sitting, I found my mind wandering and getting a little bored if I am to be honest.
Any additional comments?
The story is progressing ponderously, their is an awful lot of padding and going over old ground, it's like the author had a great idea and then was not quite sure where to go with it. I write this having not finished the book yet, I think I've

Amazing book!
Where does Prince Lestat rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
One of the best of the chronicles. It brings together all the characters.
Any additional comments?
The book is very like Interview in that it deals with multiple characters. This book however goes into more depth and does not just follow central characters but it runs along a single theme that all characters are heading towards! Excellent book from a vampire master!

Boring
I have not read Anne Rice for many years. I did not bother completing the story. The first part of the story introduces a new character in each chapter and tells the story from that characters perspective. The problem is as you start identifying with the character the chapter ends and its yet another new character. This occurs for about a third of the entire book. So the book has a really, really long beginning. The story does not seem to go anywhere. Having given in depth introductions some of those characters barely appear again. I should have stopped a lot sooner.
