With its irrepressible heroine and playful literary games, Northanger Abbey is the most youthful and optimistic of Jane Austen's novels. It tells the story of young, impressionable Catherine Morland, whose first experience of fashionable society introduces her to the thrills of gothic romances, and to the sophisticated Tilneys, who invite her to their family home, Northanger Abbey. But there, influenced by novels of horror and intrigue, Catherine begins to think that terrible crimes are being committed, and her imagination threatens to run away with her.

Emily Jane Bronte was born July 30, 1818 at Thornton in Yorkshire. Emily's mother died in 1821 and her two eldest sisters died in 1825, leaving Emily, her brother and two sisters to be raised by their aunt. Publisher's Summary
Jane Austen’s most popular novel, originally published in 1813, some 17 years after it was first written, presents the Bennet family of Longbourn. Against the background of gossipy Mrs. Bennet and the detached Mr. Bennet, the quest is on for husbands for the five daughters. The spotlight falls on Elizabeth, second eldest, who is courted by Mr. Darcy, though initially she is more concerned with the fate of her other sisters. This marvelous account of family life in Regency England is read with customary panache by Juliet Stevenson.

Austen + Stevenson = Love. Read on!
First, I assume anyone reading this review is familiar with P&P and is just wondering whether it's worth adding another audiobook to his/her/zir/their collection. The short answer is: yes IF you also love Ms. Stevenson.
The longer answer is that I have to confess that Ms. Stevenson is fixed in memory as the indelicate Mrs. E. of the 1996 Emma film and *is* the voice of the Austen novels via Naxos CDs in the 2000s (then Audible). Thus, it caught me a little off-guard to realize that some of her usual Shakespearean clip and general vivacity were missing from this recording, as she can't have aged! She reads a little more slowly than earlier books (of course, that could be sped up, but I didn't want to). Her characters aren't always consistent in this version. Yet, blessedly, she doesn't fall into the trap that irks me about some of the other P&P narrators (Ms. Pike and Ms. Fox) and take Mrs. Bennet into hysterical shrieks (a bit more like the version from Audible Studios by Ms. Duncan). The voice of Mrs. Bennet changes, but it doesn't make me jump for the volume button. And, as I continued to listen, I realized that I knew the story (of course) so I knew the characters and just relaxing and hearing one of my favourite narrators (Ms. Stevenson) read one of my favourite books, the way she wanted to read it to me, was a wonderful gift and well worth the credit. It was rather presumptuous of me to even take issue with her choices in the first place, so I hope you don't make my mistake and just enjoy the experience.

Masterful reading of a literary masterpiece
Jane Austen’s writing is at its best in Pride and Prejudice. So much more than a romance novel, it is a delightful comedy of manners. It is also a welcome escape from the modern penchant for extreme emotion, action, or violence in storytelling. Pride and Prejudice is a true masterpiece.
Juliet Stevenson’s performance is absolutely perfect. Characters are clearly portrayed. She infuses them with the life and wit of the story. Ms Stevenson’s timing and cadence are excellent, pausing just long enough at all the right moments giving listeners a moment to savor what we just heard before going on.

1 star star for the narration
There is nothing to say about the story itself, or the talent of the author. Pride and prejudice is a well known masterpiece.
It is in fact my favourite book of all times!
However, this narrator managed to spoil it for me. She managed to make Elizabeth sound like Caroline Bingley, so much so I could not bear her. Furthermore, the different voices attempted to differentiate the characters were often mixed up. And the clearing of the throat every time the —shire militia was mentioned was insupportable.
All that made me for the first time (after thousands of reading and listening to P&P) in my life not finish the book. I had to stop in the middle of the Netherfield ball.
Now, I must read the paper version, and definitely listen to another version of the audio (Read by Karen Savage or Rosamund Pike) to cleanse my memory.

The narrator killed Lizzie's character
While I think the narrator is good at reading, her interpretation and voice for characters were terrible. Seeing the 2005 version movie, the pace of the story worked better than the book, much, much less chatter to tell the story. I was hoping the book would provide more details into Liz & Darcy romance...and it did, but I had to wade through so much long, long, drawn out conversations. The book is TMI in my opinion...Too much information -half of which I didn't care about. That's all.

It is a truth universally acknowledged
It is a truth universally acknowledged that any audio book narrated by Juliet Stevenson is going to be most agreeable. It would be ungenerous of me if I did not mention that I first heard that Ms Stevenson had made this recording whilst listening to an interview with her on Graham Norton's Bookclub podcast here on Audible. Many of us are familiar with Pride and Prejudice but it is a long time since I last read it and hearing Jane Austen's prose read out loud by such a talented narrator is a real treat. I enjoyed the richness of the language and there could not be but curiosity at the references to "countenance", "vexations", "civility", "disposition", "impertinence" and, my favourite of all ""superciliousness". Wonderful.

A Real Treat!
If I could have made one request of an audiobook it would have been to have my favourite book of all time read by my favourite female narrator. I sat and listened at every opportunity during one week. It will not be the last time I listen as the reading of Pride and Prejudice has been something I have done every few years. To have it read by Juliet Stevenson whilst cooking or knitting was, for me, bliss.
On the critical side I would say Jane’s voice was a little too simpering for me but it didn’t detract from the overall experience.
So worth the credit!

Elizabeth of 500 voices
I love Juliet Stevenson. I adore her. I've listened to many of her narrations. To unite my favourite Jane Austen work and her reading it, it felt like a dream come true.
I felt that the book was rendered extremely professionally and competently. She highlighted the key moments very well.
But I was disappointed. The narration appeared inconsistent.
Elizabeth seems to speak in a different voice every time she opens her mouth. It's always a good voice but it never feels truly hers. Sometimes I found it hard to work out who's who. For example during her conversation with her friend, Charlotte Lucas. This was the case with some other characters too
Lyndsey Duncan's performance remains the better one imho.
