Ania is the beautiful, clever and very slightly bored scion of a rich Indian family whose machinations soon lead her down the primrose path of match-making - first for her aunt ('There was one in most of the grand houses in Delhi, usually beached somewhere on the upper floors.') and then for her friend Dimple. Set against the background of 'polite' Delhi society, it is rich with stiletto-sharp observation, is a delightful social comedy and yet is poignant, too.

Publisher's Summary
Award-winning author Sonali Dev launches a new series about the Rajes, an immigrant Indian family descended from royalty, who have built their lives in San Francisco....
It is a truth universally acknowledged that only in an overachieving Indian American family can a genius daughter be considered a black sheep.
Dr. Trisha Raje is San Francisco’s most acclaimed neurosurgeon. But that’s not enough for the Rajes, her influential immigrant family who’s achieved power by making its own nonnegotiable rules:
- Never trust an outsider
- Never do anything to jeopardize your brother’s political aspirations
- And never, ever, defy your family
Trisha is guilty of breaking all three rules. But now, she has a chance to redeem herself. So long as she doesn’t repeat old mistakes.
Up-and-coming chef DJ Caine has known people like Trisha before, people who judge him by his rough beginnings and place pedigree above character. He needs the lucrative job the Rajes offer, but he values his pride too much to indulge Trisha’s arrogance. And then he discovers that she’s the only surgeon who can save his sister’s life.
As the two clash, their assumptions crumble like the spun sugar on one of DJ’s stunning desserts. But before a future can be savored there’s a past to be reckoned with....
A family trying to build home in a new land.
A man who has never felt at home anywhere.
And a choice to be made between the two.

From the Male Perspective
Sonali Dev undertook something quite difficult with this story, with a title linking it to the famous Jan Austin novel. I feel she did a brilliant job modernizing the tale while also tackling some pretty heavy issues with grace and subtlety.
I have to say I enjoyed every moment of it, Dev did an amazing job switching the Darcy character to the female lead while also drifting into the perspective of the Elizabeth character as a male.
The descriptions of the hunky DJ Kane were a bit much for a straight man to bear, but hey I know I am not the target audience. As a man, I enjoyed the main character and her quirks, as well as her strong and independent spirit.

Awesome Retelling
This was a fantastic retelling of Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice because Sonali Dev captured the essence of a beloved story while injecting her own original spin. The retelling didn't feel forced. Instead, Dev only used parts of the original story instead of forcing the plot to conform. I love the way Sonali flipped the gender roles and how she didn't shy away from discussing deep social issues. The issues never felt preachy, instead, it was just a part of characters and of the story line. I'm not a fan of insta-love so I really appreciated the slow burn and the focus on character development. The HEA is so much more satisfying when the characters earn their relationship.

Fascinating characters come to life
Great gender twist on Pride and Prejudice, with a hilariously flawed heroine.
Also, the narrator is a superb voice actress, I'm now looking for other books narrated by her.
This story about the Rajes family is apparently the first in a series, and the author has created some fascinating characters. I have fallen in love with them and am excited to find out where the author takes them next!

Great story, not so great reader
I loved the story, but the narrator tried way too hard to be dramatic & breathy. It felt like she was over doing it, like a dramatic movie announcer, even just on saying the chapter numbers, which took away from the listening experience

Pride and Prejudice with a Twist
I enjoyed this modern version of Pride and Prejudice. It's one of the best I've read. It uses the themes, characters, and details from its predecessor to create a new story with the spirit of the original. It is a complete story with themes, characters, and details from Pride and Prejudice fitting in seamlessly with an Indian family in modern times. I really enjoyed reading this book and could not put it down. This is a book I will re-read.
Trish Raje is a gifted and dedicated neurosurgeon who carries guilt about something that happened in the past. Her current patient, Emma Caine, is the sister of DJ Caine, a private chef hired by her family to cater a dinner. She meets him after arriving late and barging into the kitchen where he is preparing dessert. She gets to know DJ better as she treats Emma and tries to convince Emma to have surgery to save her life.
She likes DJ but is insecure about her feelings for him. When a former friend reappears, she begins to face her fears and the guilt she carries from the past and starts to let go of what's holding her back. DJ is attracted to Trisha but is also unsure about her because of what her former friend Julia has said about her. DJ eventually learns the truth about Julia and the Raje family. Trisha and DJ let go of earlier impressions of the other and acknowledge their feelings for each other. They both let go of the past and move forward into the future.
