Story
Defined as a formal, solemn, and binding agreement or compact, a covenant is commonly used with regard to relations among nations or as part of a contract. But it can also apply to a marriage as Elizabeth Bennet learns when her father binds her in marriage to a man she dislikes. Against her protests that she cannot be bound against her will, the lady is informed that she lives under her father’s roof and, consequently, is under his control. She is a mere pawn in the proceedings. With such an inauspicious beginning, how can two people so joined ever make a life together?

Story
"You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you." When Fitzwilliam Darcy spoke these words to Elizabeth Bennet as part of his marriage proposal, they expressed his concealed feelings completely, but their meaning was at odds with the rest of his prideful and arrogant offer of marriage. It was therefore rather easy for Elizabeth to reject his offer in much the same manner. But what if Darcy, never one at ease when trying to speak of inner sentiments, had realized beforehand how his intended proposal would sound to the young woman he hoped to make his bride?

Story
Seventeen-year-old Elizabeth Bennet always hoped to marry for love. That is, until she surrenders to her mother’s demands and marries the handsome Duke of Leeds. Thrust into a society disinclined to accept the "country nobody" who entrapped one of their most sought-after bachelors, her marriage of convenience is nothing like she expected.
Publisher's Summary
One of the turning points in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice is Miss Elizabeth Bennet's passionate refusal and denunciation of the equally passionate but infinitely more repressed Fitzwilliam Darcy. However, unforeseen events can lead to the most unexpected consequences.
During a visit with her friend, Charlotte Collins, at Hunsford, Elizabeth falls prey to illness for almost the first time in her life just as Mr. Darcy comes to call. Befuddled by her illness, she misinterprets his proposal of marriage, and a simple nod of acknowledgment is mistaken for acceptance of his suit by a joyous Darcy.
By the time Elizabeth regains her health, it seems every one of her acquaintances - and many outside of it - accepts she is engaged to the last man in the world she would ever consider. Elizabeth knows that her life will be forever changed, and the consequences will spread further than she imagines.

Enjoyable Plot Twists
This was an interesting if somewhat dry P&P variation. The dialog between the characters was enjoyable so was the different twists the author added for them. Wickham’s story was very satisfying. The author used his historical knowledge of the time to “tell” us more about the Navy, Army, Wars and some individual battles that involved a couple characters. When there was dialog and interaction between the characters it was very interesting and enjoyable. At times, in an effort to move the story along, the author would stop the character’s interaction and just recite events, which actually made the story drag for me. An example is the ending, if fleshed out it would have made a very good sequel but instead there was a 30 minute long epilogue detailing future events. Overall I enjoyed this story. My personal preference is usually for the more light hearted variations though and this was more serious.
The narrator was good. Her voice was pleasant and perfect for a historical novel. She was able to keep my attention during the dry recitation sections, many narrators couldn’t have pulled that off. Though Mrs. Bennett, Lady Catherine and Capt. George Fitzwillam voices were very distinct she didn’t always use widely different voices or accents for many of the characters, the inflections and tones were more subtle, but I never had any trouble knowing who was speaking.
I was given this free review copy at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

My Thoughts on Pride, Prejudice and Secrets
I'm a huge P&P fan so this book already got my attention with that tie in alone. But I'm a fan of not only the original but several variations as well. I've tried contemporary, I've tried zombies, I've tried a lot of variations. This was one of the good ones.
I loved the premise of this version in which Elizabeth said yes to the first proposal. I liked how it was written, it seemed believable the way the "acceptance" came about. And then the way things unfolded after was really well done also. There were some twists that I didn't see coming and changes I'm still not sure I liked. But overall I think the author did a really good job.
The narrator had an excellent voice and I felt like her performance helped my enjoyment of this story a lot. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to more by her in future.

Enjoyable Retelling
I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and all opinions expressed herein are my own.
This is a re-telling of Pride and Prejudice. It picks up the story when Darcy confesses to Elizabeth that he loves her. But here, Elizabeth is very ill when she hears the confession and in her haze, accepts Darcy's proposal. When she recovers, she must deal with her mistaken engagement.
I enjoyed this version of the story and I wish the focus had stayed on Darcy and Elizabeth as it seemed that their relationship was rather quickly resolved and any tension between them quickly dissolved. However, in my opinion, it unneccessarily strayed to other minor characters such as Wickham or Caroline Bingley.
The narrator, Katherine Anderson, did a nice job and made the story more enjoyable.

Like Sliding Doors for P&P!
Such a fascinating book! Loved hearing this alternative reality for all of the characters from Pride and Prejudice. Some have similar storylines while others go in a very different direction. Which “villains” obtain redemption and which do you continue to dislike? In many ways, it’s a more satisfying conclusion since you get to find out more of what happens to each character - from Georgiana to Collins to Wickham. Even with a different author and different ending, all of the characters seemed to stay true to their personalities and styles, and it was easy to picture this as the way Jane Austen may have wished their stories to be.
The only criticisms I have are that the book doesn’t really contain the wit that Jane Austen’s version had, and the narrator at times stumbles over the words and at other times seems bored. There isn’t much differentiation between the character voices either, but overall I really enjoyed this and would definitely recommend it to any Jane Austen fans out there!

Cute but repetitive...
I found myself enjoying this novel but was often distracted by the repetitive narrative and the narrators stumbles. It was an easy story line to follow. Everyone gets a happy ending. Not bad, not great, just a cute and light P&P variation.

Interesting and Unusual Variation
This Pride and Prejudice variation begins during Lizzy's visit with Charlotte Collins at Hunsford Parsonage. Lizzy wakes one morning feeling a bit dizzy, but refuses to admit she's sick. When Darcy arrives later that morning, she's too ill to respond when he proposes, and only responds with a nod. By the time Lizzy recovers and realizes what she's done, Darcy has notified his aunt, asked permission from her father, and met with the Gardiners. Too entangled to remove herself from the engagement, Lizzy resigns herself to the dreadful match and decides to learn more about her future husband. Imagine her surprise when the arrogant man she thought she knew turns out to be the most caring and devoted fiancee she could have asked for.
This was an interesting and unusual Pride and Prejudice variation! I really enjoyed the first part of the book as Lizzy deals with the repercussions of her mistaken acceptance of Darcy's proposal. I found myself anticipating Lizzy and Darcy's first meeting after their engagement and enjoyed every time they appeared on the page. Watching Darcy slowly win over each member of the Bennet family was a pleasure.
After the proposal, there's surprisingly little angst between the main characters. Instead we follow along as Jane, Georgiana, Ms. Bingley, Col. Fitzwilliam, and Wickham live their lives and find their own happy endings. I loved it! The book also included historical references and details about the war which were really interesting. And the quotes in the chapter headings added just that much more. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.
