About this listen

Homicide prosecutor David Brunelle faces the most difficult case of his career. An innocent young girl is murdered in a heinous, unforgivable way. The only evidence against the killer is the full confession of his accomplice - another young girl he also victimized. But the accomplice is charged with the murder as well, which means that she has the right to remain silent. And she's so scared of the killer, she refuses to take a deal to testify against him.

Brunelle can't just let the murderer walk, but how can he get a conviction when he has no admissible evidence and the killer is protected by the presumption of innocence?

The arrogance of lawyers, how they twist and turn events to make cases. The defence getting the prosecution’s evidence makes the whole trial into a circus. It’s like having an open book exam. How is that fair to victims and their families. The danger to witnesses. Judges weighting the issues by bias, as well as their behaviour towards defence or prosecution influencing juries. Psychology of power over - intimidating ordinary people into thinking that is how they should vote. This book was edge of your seat exciting. Great listening.

The innocent.

This story was great because it wasn’t drawn out like other police/courtroom dramas. Just the right length. I’d have given it 5 stars except that I predicted Kat’s daughter would somehow be involved in a nasty scene at the end. Americans and their guns never cease to amaze me!!!
Still, better than many of the other top crime writers.

Great Courtroom Drama
