Ils savaient qu'ils étaient libres en Christ, mais ils ignoraient le sens exact de cette liberté. Quelle attitude devaient-ils adopter à l'égard des idoles et de la sexualité ? Que devaient-ils faire en ce qui concernait le mariage, le rôle des femmes dans l'Eglise et les dons de l'Esprit ? C'étaient plus que des questions théoriques : l'Eglise était affaiblie par l'immoralité et l'immaturité spirituelle. La foi des chrétiens était mise à l'épreuve pendant ces temps difficiles d'immoralité à Corinthe, et le test avait été fatal à certains.
