Publisher's Summary

Warning: This novel contains excessive humor, action, excitement, adventure, magic, romance, and bodies. Proceed with caution.

What do you get when you mix gorgons, an incubus, and the Calamity Queen? Trouble, and lots of it.

Working as the only human barista at a coffee shop catering to the magical is a tough gig on a good day. Bailey Gardener has few options. She can either keep spiking drinks with pixie dust to keep the locals happy or spend the rest of her life cleaning up the world’s nastiest magical substances.

Unfortunately for her, Faery Fortunes is located in the heart of Manhattan Island, not far from where Police Chief Samuel Quinn works. If she’d been smart, she never would have agreed to help the man find his wife.

Bailey found her, all right - in the absolutely worst way possible.

One divorce and several years later, Bailey is once again entangled in Chief Quinn’s personal affairs, and he has good reason to hate her. Without her, he wouldn’t be Manhattan’s Most Wanted Bachelor, something he loathes. Without her, he’d still be married.

If only she’d said no when he asked her help, she might have had a chance with him. While her magic worked well, it came with a price: misfortune. Hers.

When Quinn’s former brother-in-law comes to her for help, he leaves her with a cell phone and 75,000 reasons to put her magic to the test. However, when she discovers Quinn’s ex-wife is angling for revenge, Bailey’s tossed in the deep end along with her sexiest enemy.

Good fun, with an amazing narrator

The story is light, amusing and thoroughly enjoyable. An great way to spend a day with a smile on your face.

The real joy is Courtney Holly. She used a broad New York accent (a first in a book, for me) and managed to inject more glee and enthusiasm than any other narrator I have come across. Her speech rhythm is fairly fast paced and sounds completely natural. I will be definitely downloading more books with her reading them.

Fun fun fun

I have enjoyed all the books by this author and this one is just so much fun. The Jersey accent surprised me at first because I have heard a different voice in my head when I first read the book. But after a few minutes, I realized , the narrator was perfect.I thoroughly enjoyed this story when I read the book and I'm finding little things I'd missed with this audible.version. Characters are fun, colorful and very likeable and you'll want to know more about them. Bailey is such a great character and you'll love her.

Very funny!

Playing with Fire is one of my favorite stories and I'm glad to see it on Audible! In this world, magic common and plain vanilla human is uncommon. Bailey is a barista at a pixie dust coffee house and has a side job working for the CDC as HazMat cleanup since she has an immunity to pixie dust, gorgon bile and other magical substances. During the worst 18 hr shift ever, her boss ditches work for a ride with Bailey’s secret crush and doesn’t return, her coworkers don’t show up, the coffee shop does record business, Bailey quits and goes home. Then, a gorgon dust cell phone bomb, blows up in her face. This is just the beginning…

The world building is great! Pixie dust is a legal recreational drug (in low doses and lower grades) allows for a high without a low. Angels have no heads. Magical neutralizer is bright pink and shiny. Gorgon bile can petrify so they wear sunglasses and cover their snakes when in public.

The first thing I thought when I turned on the audio book was “Why in the world does Bailey have a thick New York accent when she grew up in New Jersey?” That was jarring to me, but I only knew that because I had read the book before listening to the audio book.

The voice was just right

I had purchased the book but not the individual one but the starter pack six stories . When I read the story I loved it but when this audio book it is fantastic the reader used an accent that captured Bailys voice perfectly. I hesitated in
purchasing this audio book but luckily still had a credit from Audible club. But all it took was a sample to listen and I knew I had to use it . It also helps that her books have the perfect blend of being sexy but not porno. It is a comedy and romance not only that but also adventures.

Amazing Audiobook!!!

I read the book, then decided to listen to the Audio book. Courtney Holly does a fantastic job. It's rare to have a narrator provide such animation to the story. This is one Audio book that I can listen to over and over. Absolutely amazing!

Best story not so great Narrator

I LOVED this story. it was funny and sad and it pulled my emotions out. I want to read more with these two.

I didn't like how the narrator sounded with her accent at 1.5 speed. She sounded rushed and breathy. I always listen at this speed and others with accents don't sound like this. When I slow it down it sounds better but I can't listen to it slower.

Awesome Story, Superb Narration with a NY Lilt

If your new to RJ Blain and her universe of weird and wonderfull magical creatures, and you can't decide whether to get the Kindle version or splash a credit & jump into audio, get both, you won't be dissappointed because this is a book you'll want to read/listen to over & over. The story is a fast paced, well written, witty snark fest with an excellent plot, and the dry banter between the characters will have you snort-laughing out loud. I initially read this book on Kindle & was so impressed I had to get the audio version and Courtney Holly's narration doesn't dissappoint, with just the right amount of Noo Yawk (New York) accent to really bring the characters alive. Definitely worth 5 stars and I can't wait for the last couple of books out of the series to hit Audible.
