 Ficțiunea a fost blândă cu mine: mi-a arătat cum traversau orașele crupe de dame, pe când boschetarii dormeau, mi-a arătat cum un om poate să fie luat din genunchi și așezat într-un pat de femeie, așezat acolo ca un semn de întrebare. Și tot ea mi-a arătat ce rămâne când secunda se termină și cum se poate racorda timpul la ritmul bătăilor inimii unei necunoscute după o criză de astm, și cum să supraviețuiesc trăind singur ca un Dumnezeu bolnav, și cum se pot ridica scriitorii, ca niște duhuri, din mașinile lor de scris – în vremea vițeilor de aur. În povestiri am dărâmat temple, aici am fost înjunghiat la o răscruce de tăceri, aici am fost cel mai bun. Toate aceste texte m-au vindecat atât cât puteam fi vindecat de mine însumi.
