About this listen

Stranded on the distant planet Tschai, young Adam Reith is the sole survivor of a space mission who discovers the world is inhabited - not only by warring alien cultures but by human slaves as well, taken early in Earth's history. Reith must find a way off the planet to warn Earth of Tschai's deadly existence.

Against a backdrop of baroque cities and haunted wastelands, sumptuous palaces and riotous inns, Reith will encounter deadly wastrels and murderous aliens, dastardly villains and conniving scoundrels - and always the random beauty in need of rescue.

This classic story by Jack Vance, originally published in 4 seperate novels, will appeal to all lovers of action and adventure. The sci-fi setting for this story is the planet Tschai - a diverse world of multiple alien races and human evolved cultures. Vance has developed Tschai as a massive melting pot of creatures that populate a rich environment full of strange beauty, with weird but wonderful cities, fascinating inhabitants, bizarre customs, and challenging adversaries. Some of the adversaries are also very dodgy, and this adds an element I found very humorous in the story.

Thrown into this world is spaceship crash survivor Adam Reith. His adventures, along with the Tschai inhabitants he meets and the relationships he develops, form the basis for the story as he progresses a long quest to return to Earth while trying to free the enslaved humanoid denizens. Tschai is a truly magical place. The portrayal of the alien races living there are intricately described - their strangeness and ability to vex Reith making for compelling reading.

This is quite simply one of the best things I have ever read. And just as good as I (vaguely) recall it being when I first read it 30 years ago. The narrator was also superb, and lent the right touch to all the weird and wonderful happenings, with engaging voices and accents. Overall, 5 stars, and thank you for your stories Mr Vance. Now to read the Dying Earth books again.

Absolutely superb in every respect

Beautifully read thanks elijah! The tall tales of adam wreath, marooned spaceman and superhuman crash lands on the world chai. Only to find that other humans are on the planet as well sunservients to the other races - dirdir, pnume and wonk. His quest is one of survival and escape - to rebuild a space ship so he can return to earth. So much adventure and imagination amongst these pages, its a delight to listen and reread.

Classic jack vance.
