Publisher's Summary

From the author of Falling with Folded Wings comes a furious new fantasy series, in which a teenage, hard-case Earthling tries to earn some class . . .

Victor can’t wait to get the hell out of high school, go to the local community college on a sports scholarship, and start his own life. But that’s all put on hold when he enters his abuela’s house and somehow ends up stepping into a world unlike anything he’s ever known, filled with fantastical meta-humans; walking, talking devils; and other creatures one usually needs some serious pharmaceuticals to see.

Fanwath is no dream, though. In fact, it’s a nightmare. Sold into slavery as a pit fighter, Victor quickly learns his new home is controlled by the “System” and the only way to get ahead is to fight, kill, and collect the precious “Energy” that means the difference between a long life and an early grave. And according to his stats, Victor’s starting out at a solid zero.

Lucky for him, no one in this world has ever met his kind before—which means they have no idea what he’s really capable of. But they’re about to find out . . .

The first volume of the hit LitRPG adventure series—with more than 750,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

Good fun

I found the book had good action scenes depicted and that the characters weren't just good or bad which was nice.
I found the narrator did a very good job and didn't break immersion for me at all.
The MC feels particularly well written when it comes to feelings and reactions to situations.
I don't usually go for books that are so short time wise as I like to get the longer ones but I will definitely get the next one.

Awesome story

Great read with a really likeable MC. He starts the story as a pit fighter and ends the story in a dungeon with plenty of growth. Looking forward to the next instalment.

Fun

The main character has some interesting abilities, the progression is gradual and constant, and the story is enjoyable enough to listen to

Wow - don’t miss this

The author is fantastic. I find a lot of litrpg authors are your average DnD player inspired to write (I have 200 plus in my library).l however PlumParrot is not your average author, has an actual knack for writing ! The pacing is great never misses a beat, the magic system is interesting and the characters are solid and not 1D. After finishing pit fighter picked up his other audible book and again- homerun loving it. Thanks PP and solid narration too!

See how he rises

Victor is positioned as a bit of a punchbag of circumstance. Does he play the victim? Ok. Maybe he gripes a little, but he grows. The character development is steady and always feels earned. I’m looking forward to seeing what he becomes. A great story that is both fantastical and grounded. Robb Moreira does a great job narrating, and I hope Plum Parrot finds a way to make him sing another marching-song. That was hilarious

Better than most, not quite cream of the crop

Setting - ⅘ (good, but not mind blowing, didn't find myself grating at shallow cultural design or anything like that)

MC - ⅗ (eeeh, he's decently written, and i personally like him, but again he's sadly a bit bland at the end of the day)

SC - ⅘ (this is probably where the book stands above the crowd the most, side-characters are interesting, have decent dialogue, and the writer pulls a few G.R.R Martin's)

System - ⅘ (again, nothing special, I give an extra point for the author, using it as a device, and not constantly trying to cram how big they can make the imaginary numbers in their imaginary world)

Honorable mention:
Exposition - 4/5 (the Exposition on multiple aspects of the setting and system is mercifully short)

if you want a devolving storyline

its honestly a bad situation after the other, it seems hopeless from one thing after the other. its a good premise and world but the story kept getting worse to worse. its hard to finish.
its like the author doesnt know how to turn the story other than doing something negative to the mc. everything is fully plot driven, not character driven at all

Railroaded

"Pit Fighter" has about 4~ pit fighting events that only last until half way into the book before it transitions into something else entirely. This story has progression in the same way a train track does, single lane with not much the MC can do about it. This isn't necessarily to blame the MC themselves, they are an enjoyable character (when they are not putting their foot in their mouth) and are quite literally forced into a situation many would find worth than death and are forced to grow to even hope to survive. However, the plot moves without the MC with them doing nothing personally to progress it until about 80~% of the way through and even then they find a McGuffin that facilitates such changes.

Perhaps it's all a setup for the author to have the MC tear down the world or something to that degree but right now the story feels more akin to the author kicking the MC down, giving them something great, kicking them down again and repeating till the end. Its a shame, i really did like where the possible pit fighting was heading till that stopped being a thing.
