Absolutely amazing book, I loved it entirely! If you've read The Great Train Robbery by our friend Crichton then this is a similar smart heist adventure but in the sunny tropics with more swash buckling and more endearing characters. Crichton throws everything at you that would be unique about being a privateer in that time and place; interesting sea life, encounters with native peoples, bawdyness and elegance side by side in the small wealthy town of Port Royal, and of course a healthy sprinkling of hostile Spanish. This book works as a heist story, an adventure story, a story of daring do, and also a drama between characters with shifting loyalties. 10/10 his best book.

Adventure and daring with a wink

The main thing I like about Michael Crichton is that his books are based on true stories. Not my favourite, though but we’ll worth a listen.

It has all the classic elements—treasure ships, sea battles, jungle escapes, and even a sea monster. Captain Hunter is a sharp, capable lead, and Crichton paints a vivid picture of Port Royal’s corrupt and dangerous world.

That said, the plot is pretty straightforward, and most of the characters beyond Hunter feel flat. You can also tell this was a posthumous release—some parts feel unpolished, like a strong first draft that could’ve used one more pass.

Still, if you’re in the mood for a quick, action-heavy pirate tale with historical flair, it’s an entertaining listen. Just don’t expect the depth or tension of Crichton’s more famous work.
