Lonnie blev som lille pige gennem længere tid systematisk misbrugt seksuelt af sin far. Som det så ofte er, var hun flov over det, men på et tidspunkt tog hun mod til at fortælle om misbruget. Faren blev dømt og kom i fængsel, men hermed var Lonnies mareridt ikke ovre. De næste mange år røg hun ind i stofmisbrug, hun blev luder, rockertøs og fik ganske enkelt et rigtig dårligt liv. Men med imponerende viljestyrke valgte hun at rette op på sit liv, tage en uddannelse og sørge ordentlig for sine to døtre. Pigen i spejlet er en så hudløst ærlig og sine steder næsten så ubærlig en bog, at det ikke er til at fatte. Men samtidig er den så livsbekræftende, at man mere end én gang kniber en tåre.
