About this listen

After being court-martialed by the Space Legion for ordering the strafing of a treaty-signing ceremony, multimillionaire Willard Phule receives his punishment: He must command the misfit Omega Company on Haskin's Planet, a mining settlement on the edge of settled space. At his duty station, he leverages his personal money and a knack for managing people to get the company to come together as a unit. Phule convinces the governor to leave the contract for an honorary duty up for competition between the Space Legionnaires and the Regular Army. The Army sends some of their most elite troops to take part in the competition, but Phule's company operates with their own unique tactics....

I truly enjoyed this book. The narrator did more than just read it, he brought it to life. I was sad when it ended because I wanted more.

Pure entertainment

Having first read Phule’s Company many years ago, I recently decided to revisit it in audiobook format—and I’m pleased to say the experience was every bit as enjoyable as my first encounter with this witty sci-fi classic.

Much of the audiobook’s charm can be credited to narrator Noah Michael Levine, whose energetic and nuanced performance breathes life into every character, whether human or alien. His delivery perfectly complements Robert Asprin’s playful and satirical tone, elevating the story into a truly engaging listening experience.

While Asprin is also well known for his fantasy and myth-inspired works, I firmly believe that the Phule’s Company series stands as his finest creation. The writing is sharp, the humour intelligent, and the pacing brisk. What I particularly appreciate is that the plots are clever without being overly complex—a refreshing contrast to much of today’s dense science fiction. Asprin manages to balance accessibility with depth, keeping readers entertained without demanding mental gymnastics.

I plan to purchase and listen to the entire series, even though I read them all years ago. The combination of Asprin’s lighthearted storytelling and Levine’s narration ensures these stories remain timelessly enjoyable.

Highly recommended—both for nostalgic fans and for newcomers looking for a smart, funny, and effortlessly enjoyable slice of classic science fiction.

Totally entertaining with a refreshingly new idea

if you've ever read a managerial book like Phoenix Project... it's that but pretending to be sci-fi. There's zero plot development, character development. It's just a series of minor problems solved half a page later, with money and communication. It's an upper manager trying to write fiction. One dimensional characters, do-no-wrong lead. It's not even fun bad... it's just bland.
