Paul Temple lernt auf dem Rückflug von einer Vortragsreise durch die USA den amerikanischen Verleger Mike Langdon kennen. Dieser soll im Auftrag seines Londoner Chefs George Kelburn verhindern, dass dessen Tochter Julia den Schlagersänger Tony Wyman heiratet. In London angekommen, ist Steve Temple spurlos verschwunden.
In ihrem Auto findet die Polizei einen Mantel mit dem Firmenaufdruck "Margo". Glücklicherweise taucht Steve unbeschadet wieder auf, doch kurz darauf wird eine Frauenleiche aus der Themse geborgen - bekleidet mit einem ebensolchen Mantel.
