Wer eine Reise macht, der bringt manchmal so viele neue Eindrücke und Erlebnisse mit, dass er sich anschließend selbst ganz neu und verändert vorkommt. So ging es auch dem Maler Paul Klee, der im April 1914 zusammen mit zwei Künstlerfreunden nach Tunesien reiste. Kaum angekommen, war er so überwältigt vom Licht und von den Farben und Formen des unbekannten Landes, dass er sofort seine Skizzenbücher, Pinsel und Stifte hervor holte und anfing zu malen, u.a. auch den Burggarten. Er entdeckte, dass er als Künstler genau so schöpferisch sein konnte, wie die Natur. Er brauchte die Wirklichkeit nur anzudeuten, mithilfe der Farben erstand sie neu. In sein Tagebuch schrieb der Maler: "Das ist der glücklichen Stunden Sinn: ich und die Farbe sind eins. Ich bin Maler."
