A very good read

really really enjoyed it. The narrator really brought the story to life for me. Jack Ryan is awesome.

Patriot Games

If you like Tom Clancy this is a terrible abridgement. It leaves all the important parts out.

good book, but disappointing abridgement

The story's great, the narrator is very good, but the abridgement is disappointing (although someone who has not read the book would probably enjoy this abridgement, despite the fact that many of the best characterization bits are missing). The completely unnecessary musical interludes are horrible - very melodramatic, corny, quite distracting.

Excellent On All Counts

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Anybody who is an action adventure or Tom Clancy fan should enjoy this book, which is non-stop action in a realistic context.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jack Ryan is a main character in a series of Clancy books. The character is real, human, and personable, with a family and children. He is an unlikely hero who always finds himself in situations where he comes to the rescue.

Which character – as performed by Martin Sheen – was your favorite?

I have always enjoyed Martin Sheen's voice. In this case, he performs all the characters well, but I particularly enjoy his characterization of the main character, Jack Ryan.

Great Story, disappointed with the narration!

I have read this book years ago and wanted a refresh. What a disappointment! 4 chapaters, 2 hours 46 minutes. All of the details are pulled out with just the main action. The movie provide more details than this reading!

Not what I expected

Wasn't prepared for the massive amounts of story missing with the abridged version. Would have preferred if Martian Sheen read the novel in its entirety.

Great book, but..

I've been a Clancy fan since childhood so maybe I'm biased, but I love the book. Sheen's narration is a too fast for my taste, though, and the occasional music is thoroughly distracting for me.

Horrible Narration

I did not intend to get the short version. My bad. Just downloaded the unabridged edition, contingent on it not being read by the same performer as this version. Martin Sheen reads too fast, not conversationally like a storyteller. And his attempt at a British accent... please don't even bother. It's horrible. I look forward to hearing the unabridged edition. I wouldn't bother with this one.

disappointed

1) not a fan of the narrator, sheen. hes good at voices; my main beef is his talking fast to convey that things are happening fast. ugh. 2) the story. cant quite put my finger on why, but I just couldn't get sucked into the drama, it didn't seem believable. I know, I know, its totally made up, but e.g. an assasination attempt occured in the UK, and no one considered that the bad guys would seek out the guy who thwarted it? and the characters are a bit flat for me. 3) my first Clancy book, maybe his style of writing is too out of date for me. 4) finally, you should know that I dont keep reading books I dont enjoy... I know some people who will power thru something then announce it wasnt good. yikes, that's not me, so this review is from a reader who will quit after the first few chapters if I'm not hooked. i think I'm on chapter 3, and i forced myself to get to it just to be able to say i have it a good try. chapter 1 was terrible. I'm just happy I got this one on an audible credit.

Just not long enough.

Great story and narration but no where near as good as The Hunt For Red October.
