Publisher's Summary

Why do serial killers kill?

Out of the Mouths of Serial Killers is as close as you will ever come to discovering the answer...and in the killer’s own words!

In this one-of-a-kind audiobook, author Mary Brett corresponded with some of America’s most evil convicted serial killers and asked just one question: Why? Their return letters give an insightful look into the dark mind of each killer. The listener also will be able to scrutinize direct quotes, unedited, from interrogation statements, trial testimony, media interviews, and parole hearing inquests.

More than 70 serial killers are included in the audiobook, some only known to the unfortunate victims’ family, friends, and community, while others are the most infamous in the annals of serial killers. All bios feature the crime, the capture, the victims, and background facts.

Too awful for me.

It turns out I want to know as little as possible about the horrific things people do to one another.
This is a well written, well researched book, and the performance is excellent.
I just don't want to know.

not a fan of how the dates we read

The way the narrator said the dates put me off straight away. That was the killer for me. I didn't like the whole format of the story telling and I didn't end up finishing the book. Felt like I was listening to it to just finish it then realised I didn't have to listen to the rest of I didn't want to.... so I moved onto my next book.

Good content but narration is out of alignment

I have never heard gruesome details of murders outlined in such cheerful, chirpy tones. If you can get past the narration, there is some interesting information here for true crime buffs. I did not find much new material but it is a good collection of snapshots of interesting cases.

Well written, great format.
Narration was a bit stilted, but a good listen.

narrator is good but the book no

most of these serial killers stories are factually incorrect there are people who've been thrown in here to fill in space and they are not serial killers this book is not worth the read and I hate to say that because I enjoy true crime...disappointed

No insights and horrible narration

Don’t bother with this one. No insights into why these perpetrators do what they do. The vast majority of killers written to declined to comment to the author. Narrator was terrible for this genre. A tedious book that appeared to simply be about making money off the back of heinous crimes.

Waste of time

This wasn’t a great book by any standard. It starts with the premise of the author writing to a number of serial killers asking “why did you kill?” Unsurprisingly most didn’t answer this question nor were they interested in the authors book. Including this material was unnecessary and added nothing but word count. Similarly, a number of the so called serial killers, would be better described as just murderers as there were few or any linking details of the crimes (can two victims really cause someone to be called a serial killer?). The repeat sequence of “the crime”, “additional facts”, “background”, “out of the mouth of the serial killer” etc made the book highly predictable and gave no additional insight nor demonstrated literary skill. As a book it was little more than a series of facts, written in an unengaging manner. The conclusion, the authors personal stance on the death penalty felt misplaced and tacked on. Again, though there was some evidence of fact, it lacked more than rudimentary research and failed to test the theory that the death penalty is meretricious. The reader started out by attempting significantly different voices to characterise the subjects but thankfully softened her approach as she progressed through the content. There were number of editing oversights which emphasised a low budget or low skill approach to both the content and the production. One of the most disappointing books I’ve listened to.
