About this listen

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Out of the Dark by Gregg Hurwitz, read by Scott Brick.

As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from the orphanage he called home and inducted into a top secret Cold War programme. Trained as a lethal weapon, he and his fellow recruits were sent round the world to do the government's dirty work.

But the programme was rotten to the core. And now the man responsible needs things to be nice and clean. All evidence must be destroyed. That includes Evan.

To survive, Evan's going to have to take the fight to his nemesis. There's just one problem with that. Jonathan Bennett is President of the United States and Evan isn't his only victim.

To save himself - and the country - Evan is going to have to figure out how to kill the most well-protected man on the planet...

Critic Reviews

Even more compelling than its predecessors. Hurwitz uses every ounce of his exceptional skill to describe the elaborate plans that exist to protect the most powerful man in the world and how they might be circumvented. Gripping, powerful and only too believable. Don't miss it.
Out of the Dark takes the reader on a journey that covers a wide range of emotions from potential love to outright terror. The relentless action and detailed mission planning make the tale both clever and smart. It's only the end of January, but this novel will be remembered as one of the best thrillers of the year
Out of the Dark is the best thing Gregg Hurwitz has ever written and the kind of game-changing thriller that'll have people talking about it long after turning the final page.
The perfect thriller

The fourth in a series that has put Hurwitz firmly on the thriller writers' map
Orphan X is most exciting new series character since Jack Reacher. A page-turning masterpiece of suspense (Jonathan Kellerman)
Mind blowing! A perfect mix of Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher (Lisa Gardner)
Orphan X is the most exciting thriller I've read since The Bourne Identity ... A new thriller superstar is born! (Robert Crais)
A new series character to rival Reacher . . . anyone reading Orphan X won't be surprised that a cadre of peers, from Tess Gerritsen to Lee Child, have lined up to praise it

sympathising both with main characters and minor ones. You really felt like you were in their shoes, hence you understood the good and bad decisions they faced.

it was a big plot, and it was wonderfully executed

The continuity of the subthemes. Very well constructed and detailed - even though a lot of the descriptions are above my technical knowledge I still feel included. Just keep wanting the next book. .

How it all fits together is really good and unpredictable to me anyway. Loving the series and enjoying the reading.

As with all books in the series the concept of justice and the legal system creates an excellent context. I enjoyed the book and cannot wait for the next one. In many ways Evan portrays what many of us think privately. Excellent and an easy five star

So satisfying

One of the DoD architects of the Orphan program is now the US President and he’s been having the Orphans systematically executed. Evan Smoak (aka Orphan X) cannot forgive him for the lives lost and sets out to assassinate him. This puts him on a collision course with the Head of the President’s security detail and with Orphan A, whom the President has freed from jail. Meanwhile, Evan metes out vigilante justice as his other alter ego, The Nowhere Man, this time assisting a neurodivergent man who has attracted the ire of a drug smuggling operation. Evan is a busy man, he’s also keeping an eye out for his neighbour’s protection.

Phew, this was so relentlessly action-packed and I loved every moment! The systematic way Evan stalked the President was brilliant, although I was initially surprised Evan tipped his hand so early in the campaign … it all made sense later. This was a story with big emotions: I loved the menace of Orphan A and his family of goons and I found the neurodivergent man’s loss and plight incredibly moving. Although just as deadly, Evan isn’t Jack Reacher, he’s much more human and relatable, and I find his sympathy for those who are suffering very compelling. 🎧 US voice actor Scott Brick plays another blinder—he really is superb audio narrator!

Another superb action-thriller by this author!
