Publisher's Summary

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Out of the Dark by Gregg Hurwitz.

As a boy, Evan Smoak was taken from the orphanage he called home and inducted into a top secret Cold War programme. Trained as a lethal weapon, he and his fellow recruits were sent round the world to do the government's dirty work.

But the programme was rotten to the core. And now the man responsible needs things to be nice and clean. All evidence must be destroyed. That includes Evan.

To survive, Evan's going to have to take the fight to his nemesis. There's just one problem with that. Jonathan Bennett is President of the United States, and Evan isn't his only victim.

To save himself - and the country - Evan is going to have to figure out how to kill the most well-protected man on the planet....

So satisfying

As with all books in the series the concept of justice and the legal system creates an excellent context. I enjoyed the book and cannot wait for the next one. In many ways Evan portrays what many of us think privately. Excellent and an easy five star

Edge of my seat all the way.

Scott Brick + The Nowhere Man = unbeatable.
I literally couldn’t stop listening to it. Thank God it’s over as I can finally get some sleep!
This character is fast becoming my favourite action hero. If you’re new to the series then start at the start, sit back and enjoy the ride.

A little disappointed

This fourth book didn't have the same excitement for me as the other three. It was much more political, which I didn't like; and it didn't have as much emphasis on the "Do you need my help?" storyline.

I still enjoyed it, but was a little disappointed.

Love this author

This guy writes so well I feel like I am there. I can't recommend him enough. It's a romance, a thriller, an adventure do-gooding rescuer hero with plenty of realistic flaws. Just my kind of listen. Bought the book too.

Outstanding!

If you like your Jason bourne style ex assassin with a heart style you will love Evan Smoak. To compare hin to Jason though is unfair as he is way more complex way more brutal but goodness there is so much emotion in these books. Who would of thought you could tear up listening to this type of book. I can only finish by saying Mr Hurwitz is nothing short of genius putting other authors of this genre in the shade . Buy the first book in the series and by the time you reach this one you’ll be desperate for number five.. which actually is out early next year ! Please keep Evan going is all I can say!

One of the best if not the best in series

Great read/listen, highly recommend if any of the series have appealed before. Gregg Hurwitz weaves backstory and previous books together beautifully.

Only criticisms (minor spoiler) is the Mia relationship, I would have thought such a gifted author could find a way to progress that relationship in this book even if we are not taking about happily ever after. She and peter are starting to feel like a formulaic interlude where Peter derps, Evan helps, she feels for him and then before end of book we need to wrap that up so they can do it all over again next book.

Motives for other orphan to kill X seemed a bit meh as well. Solid otherwise, and what an awesome setting for the missions!

Highly recommended.

Terrific

Great pace. Interesting characters and excellent narration. Story a little far fetched but still hugely enjoyable.

Another Fantastic book in Orphan X Series

Absolutely loved this book. Such an amazing storyline and the on going battle in the head of Evan on doing the right thing. I hope this does not become the last Orphan X book as I love this series.

Great story line and narrative. Gregg Hurwitz and Scott Brick together create an awesome antihero in Orphan X.

Hurwitz and Brick a Magical Combination

The best of the Orphan X books yet. Gregg Hurwitz has really hit his straps with the fourth in the series of orphan x books, the hitman with a heart. He raises the stakes in this novel trying to best the US president and other Orphans whilst doing his day job as the nowhere man. These books are simply brought to life by Scott Brick whose narration is the most gripping, moving joyful experience any audiobook narrator has performed. I don’t know if there are Oscars for what he does but there should be because in the Orphan X novels in general and Out of the Dark in particular, his performance is masterful.
