Publisher's Summary

The New York Times Bestseller

Jordan Peele, the visionary writer and director of Get Out, Us and Nope, and founder of Monkeypaw Productions, curates this anthology of brand new stories of Black horror, exploring not only the terrors of the supernatural but also the chilling reality of injustice that haunts our world.

Featuring an introduction written and read by Jordan Peele, a full cast of narrators accompanies the all-star roster of beloved writers and new voices. Out There Screaming is a masterclass in horror, and – like his spine-chilling films – its stories prey on everything we think we know about our world, and redefine what it means to be afraid. Very afraid . . .

A cop begins seeing huge, blinking eyes in place of the headlights of cars that tell him who to pull over. Two freedom riders take a bus that leaves them stranded on a lonely road in Alabama, where several unsettling somethings await them. A young girl dives into the watery depths in search of the demon that killed her parents. Here you'll find monster-hunters fighting monsters, humanoid AIs fighting for their rights, and an Igbo woman standing up to a powerful spirit. These are just a few of the worlds of Out There Screaming, Jordan Peele’s anthology of all-new horror stories by Black writers.

Featuring stories by: Erin E. Adams, Violet Allen, Lesley Nneka Arimah, Maurice Broaddus, Chesya Burke, P. Djèlí Clark, Ezra Claytan Daniels, Tananarive Due, Nalo Hopkinson, N. K. Jemisin, Justin C. Key, L. D. Lewis, Nnedi Okorafor, Tochi Onyebuchi, Rebecca Roanhorse, Nicole D. Sconiers, Rion Amilcar Scott, Terence Taylor and Cadwell Turnbull.

Critic Reviews

These tales are all both gruesomely imaginative and firmly rooted in the realities of anti-Black racism and brutality—and there isn’t a weak one in the bunch. This is essential reading for any horror fan. (Publisher’s Weekly (starred review))

absolutely loved it

this was sooooo good! there's such an interesting variety of stories by authors both familiar and unknown to me. there's something in there for all fans of the genre!
I just wish that there was a readily available list of all the narrators for each specific story because there are a few that I want to listen to their entire catalogue of narration because they were that good!

Absolutely solid

Enjoyed every single story in this. So many new [to me] authors I can’t wait to read. Definitely worth a listen.

As usual, Jordan Peele delivers.

A great collection of short stories surrounding ‘Black horror’ which is so seldom seen in horror genre books and films. Always look forward to seeing anything Jordan Peele works on, so preordered this as soon as I found out about it.
