Alexander Lernet-Holenia wurde 1897 in Wien geboren. Sein Vater war ein Marineoffizier französischer Herkunft, seine Mutter die verwitwete Baronin Sidonie Boyneburgk, geborene Holenia. In seiner Jugend lebte er in Wien, während es ihn später auf Reisen in alle Welt hinauszog. Er diente in beiden Weltkriegen, 1918 als Kavallerieoffizier und 1933 als Oberleutnant. Danach entschied er sich konsequent für seine schriftstellerische Karriere. Er war ein vielseitiger Autor, versiert in den unterschiedlichsten Gattungen: Roman, Theater, Lyrik. Für seine frühen Bühnenwerke Ollapotrida (1926) und Österreichische Komödie (1927) erhielt er den Kleist-Preis. Es folgten viele erzählende Werke, oftmals angesiedelt in der österreichischen Geschichte. In den Jahren 1969 bis 1972 war Lernet-Holenia Präsident des Österreichischen PEN-Clubs. 1976 starb Alexander Lernet-Holenia in Wien.
