In der Phantasie der Griechen war Orpheus aus dem fernen, rauen Thrakien mit übernatürlichen Kräften begabt. Als Sohn einer Muse war ihm die göttliche Kraft des schönen Gesangs und des Leierspiels gegeben. Nicht nur Menschen, sondern auch wilde Tiere, Bäume und Felsen kamen, seiner Musik zu lauschen. Mit zarten Liebesliedern gewann er Eurydike zur Frau. Ihr gemeinsames Glück war nur kurz. Sie wurde von einer Schlange gebissen und starb. In seiner Trauer und Verzweiflung wagte es Orpheus, in die Unterwelt zu gehen. Mit seiner Zaubermusik konnte er alle Ungeheuer des finsteren Reiches besänftigen und auch den Herrscher des Totenreiches, Hades, bewegen, ihm Eurydike zurückzugeben. Allerdings unter einer Bedingung: er durfte sich auf dem Rückweg nicht nach ihr umsehen.
