Publisher's Summary

A gripping account of the grim history in the battle for Peleliu and the Pacific war.

On September 14, 1944, the US 1st Marine Division landed on the island of Peleliu, one of the Palau Islands in the Pacific, as part of a larger operation to provide support for General MacArthur, who was preparing to invade the Philippines. The cost in American lives would prove historic.

Peleliu was subject to pre-invasion bombardment, but it proved of little consequence. The Japanese defenders were buried too deep in the jungle, and the target intelligence given the Americans was faulty. Upon landing, the Marines met little resistance - but that was a ploy.

This narrative recounts the story of Peleliu in vivid, gritty detail. Explore the fascinating feats of strategy, planning, and bravery, handing the Allies what would eventually become a victory over the Pacific Theater and an end to Imperialist Japanese expansion.

Well done

WW2, pacific-theater-of-operations, historical-figures, historical-places-events, historical-research, history-and-culture, military-history, USMC, jungle-warfare, 1944*****

The aftermath of this particular conflict did provide a particular service to the war effort, but the documented cost in human life was high. This episode explains the motives and plans for both sides and shows the conflict between the generals as well as the marines.
The narrator is no-nonsense Gary Williams who infuses it with controlled interest while making it clear that this is a nonfiction account.

Another gritty and detailed account of the pacific theater by wrinn

Wrinn’s grasp of the battles and it’s participants place you onto the beaches and into the jungles and caves that the troops fought their battles on. This particular chapter highlights some amazing heroics of the men as well as the gritty realism of what they went through during the battles on these islands. Tenacity of the enemy. The difficulty of the terrain and fortifications. Truly well written and narrated. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

A Grueling Battel over a Small Island

Operation Stalemate is the story of the grinding battle to take the island of Peleilu in the Pacific Theater during World War II. On Peleilu, Allied forces encountered a highly motivated enemy which had learned the lessons of their early Pacific Theater losses and was determined to make the Allies pay for every inch of ground they took. Wrinn gets into the heads of the Japanese commanders and shows how they developed their plans to stall the allies and make the price in human life as high as possible. Then he gets into the heads of the marines and shows them struggle to get out of a killing box and eliminate the Japanese threat. The cost was tremendously high. The battle, often described as a siege, was a long and grueling one. And while the Allies were victorious, victory was so hard won that it didn’t come with the feeling of triumph that accompanied the other battles Wrinn has recounted. Perhaps that’s why he chose to end the book by showing the actual tactical and strategic and even accidental importance that Peleilu assumed for the rest of the war. This included hosting the airfield from which the scout plane that discovered the crew of the famous Indianapolis, as they tried to survive in the water after their battleship was sunk on the return voyage from delivering its cargo of atomic weapons.
