About this listen

Now a major motion picture starring Phillipa Soo, Simu Liu and Luke Bracey, a moving love story about a woman unexpectedly forced to choose between the husband she has long thought dead and the fiancé who has finally brought her back to life. From the bestselling author of The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo and Daisy Jones & The Six; now with a bonus conversation with Julia Whelan and Taylor Jenkins Reid, recorded exclusively for this edition.

In her twenties, Emma marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure. On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever.

Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.

That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and all these years he’s been trying to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants.

Who is her one true love? Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.

The story is all over the place, it’s written in present tense, then past tense, then in third person then on top of this, the narrator is so staccato and her attempt to put on a male voice makes the characters sound like they have a processing disorder. Struggling to get through the story, disappointing so far.

This story rips your heart out and pieces it back together. Another wonderful narration by Julia.

I loved everything about this book. It is a beautiful story of grief, love and family. Most importantly, it’s about knowing yourself and not living in the past.

I swooned so hard over both Jesse and Sam and I am very excited to watch this amazing book come to life on the big screen!

An interesting and insightful perspective on love, loss personal reflection and growth. But the storyline was a bit too unrealistic and the narrators male voice was annoying. Maybe it works better as a movie.

Enjoyable but over the top…
