What do you do when the game resets around you? Just when Montana thought he had life in Vuldranni figured out, the rug is pulled out from under him. He's alone once again, but now he's in the crosshairs of the man who would be emperor, and a whole host of people are counting on Montana to provide a safe haven for them. Montana has one hope of actually completing his quest of forming a dukedom: he needs to bust Nikolai out of prison. A prison that no one has ever escaped from alive.

Possible zombie sightings aside, he's finally ready to take his job as Duke seriously. Montana Coggeshall is feeling the squeeze - and not just because of his new leather pants from the goddess Eona. His little safeholding in the ruthless world of Vuldranni is under siege. On both sides. At the front is Lord Caticorix, a grade-A Imperial flunkey if there ever was one. He's clearly ridiculous, but the army he brought with him might not be. Plus they're bent on blocking Coggeshall from getting any food or supplies from the outside world.

As usual, Montana Coggeshall is hell-bent on doing what's right, even if what's right isn't exactly what's wise. So he embarks on a quest to vanquish the corrupted ursus, a threat so large they could destroy the entire world of iNcarn8. Does Montana head out after months of training for cold weather conditions, amassing an army, and strategizing with his top aides? Not really. It's more like he just walks out of his holding one day with a guide and the members of his hirð. They're just a bunch of angry teddy bears, right?

Authors not yet sure what he wants his MC to be
Let me start this by saying I forced myself through this series and it did get better by maybe book 2 or 3. (I was really bored and couldn't find a book I hadn't read/listened to in the LitRPG Genre) Now to book 1: It is obvious when someone listens or reads this book that the author has not yet set the character for his MC or doesn't explain the circumstances around their MC well enough to explain them acting or doing something completely out of character. Lets list the split personalities which is this MC shall we: - MC #1: is a badass fighting machine with quick adaptability, whose fought his way out of the muck of society and has street smarts. Likewise he's battled with his conscience due to the things he needed to do ... Basically thug with a heart etc. - OK decent start no problem, i think this was the MC the author wanted to initially portray. - MC #2: kind of goofy soft headed MC who's kind of chill and goes with the flow with things happening around/to him and completely disregards or overlooks obvious things just because... (this criticism is later halfheartedly addressed by the author in book 4 or 5 but doesn't make this criticism any less relevant/infuriating) - Complete opposite to MC #1 - MC #3: the deeply emotional and thoughtful/smart MC who battles with moral decisions in the new world etc - kind of still in line with MC#1 but he acts in a way as if he has no basis to make these decisions, like he's never been faced with these decisions before. - MC #4 the god awful!: this is the "I'm so dense and cant help but be an annoying imbecile because..." - This right here made me put the book down multiple times and i could not stand it for days especially how completely different it is compared to the other MC's. This MC was born out of the three-way unholy matrimony of the author needing a devise for exposition, needing to push the story along by having him do completed dumb things and his attempt at bringing some humor into the MC iterations with other characters. There's nothing wrong with an MC that needs to learn and grow and thus needs to be taught but to make it in such a way as if he's the densest MC in the world after giving the impression that hes street smart and a badass just doesnt work. Admittedly this story does gets a lot better by book 3 or 4 though the author keeps nailing in these moments when the MC throws all character development and learning out of the window just for the story to move forward. Its like he makes a dumb decision > says he wont do that again > then get new skill/ability/toy/etc and goes and does it again because he has to! Gah!!! That's my rant on this one done... Basically i feel like the author wanted a hardcore MC at the start but along the way broke away from that and forgot to go back and rewrite the first half of the book to match it.

If your really into litsrpg's it's an ok read
I have read the whole series so far and it has quite a few problems like there are many unexplained plot holes, the MC has abilities that he never uses that would be extremely useful eg he can demand a truthful answer once a day and never used it once in the books and constant use of the trope wear the mc gets op by killing a big monster that he shouldn't be able to, so he gets a shit ton of XP which makes him op. Otherwise, it's a fun book with interesting charterers just a bit slow for my taste.

ignore the short read time
if you are like me then one od the first things you look at is how many hours the book is, since i go through them quick. I was put off by the seven hour runtime but got it anyways and let me tell you something. its a 12-13 hour book in seven or so hours, it cuts out on flowery language, filler, overdrawn battle scenes and a massive setup for bow he gets into the other world. so if you want a lazy stroll with an extra few hours of random exposition, setting details and things this isn't for you. if you want a likable asshole who thinks outside the box, curses like a sailor and a story that jogs rather than walls, get this.

I am on book 6 of the series and all I can say is buy this book. And all the ones after it. Love the story, love the narrator, definitely worth listening to. The story is about a regular guy thrown into an RPG ish world. Not super technical but fun and funny. I was on the fence at first but now I can't get enough.

A nice change of pace
This was a pleasantly surprising addition to the LitRPG genre. While some of the usual tropes emerged, this was unique enough to stand apart. It was well written and lacked the crassness that often emerges in these stories. The narration was an... unusual choice. It took some time to adapt to the deadpan narration but I grew to enjoy it and found that it fit well with the wry humor found throughout.

Like a serialized program
OK, so I went into this with low expectations. Honestly, the covers aren’t the best things to pull you in, they kind of look quick, cheap, and hooky. However, I do not let a crappy cover scare me off, nor do I let a good one sucker me into believing it is a great tale, but I will talk a bit more about covers in the show. Anywho, I have to say that by the third chapter of this book I was utterly and completely enthralled. I was immediately sucked in. I loved the character, the world, the premise. The book hit every mark it was supposed to with me. First, and most importantly it got me into the game quickly. We didn’t go thirty five percent of the way in before hitting the game. It happens fairly early on. As in pretty much right out of the gate. That is how I prefer my LIT books, or any book to be. Get to the action, give me the exciting incident so I can enjoy the story. Ugland does just that. Secondly, the MC enters the game in a pretty cool and unique way. I especially liked how he could bring extra things in to the game for special perks. Third, we get to see that the MC isn’t perfect and does stupid things in spite of being smart. Now, I had heard that the MC is really dumb and it takes away the believability, but what I saw were a few instances of him not thinking his way completely through a problem and just relying on his abilities to get him out of danger. That’s most people. The rest I chalk up to naivete and inexperience. SO that issue gets a hard pass from me, I liked the way the MC handled things. It honestly made me feel like I was reading about myself going into a game. I am a fairly intelligent person, but I do stupid things all the time, notably in social situations, and so I totally got the way the MC handled himself. Also, while the MC comes off as being OP it certainly doesn’t feel that way. At least not to me. I think there are some perks that the MC, Montana, lucked into and exploits in a standard way. The fact that he uses his OPness for some utterly cool events doesn’t hurt the readability of this book. The best thing about this book, however, is that while it certainly is a sort of slice of life story it is a lot more. This feels like a serialized TV show, like Breaking Bad or Game of thrones, in which each episode is a nearly self contained tale, but actually leads right into the next book, and carries on the tale, going further into the over arching tale that is laid out. Seriously, I am not a huge fan of slice of life, but this does not carry that tone at all. Each book picks up right where the last left off and there is no time gap. So, like I said, it carries the feel of a single episode in a larger more planned out story. This is totally one of those Netflix and chill type of audiobooks, where you just want to binge listen to the entire series in just one go. Now, not all is kosher in Ugland, sorry Eric bad pun, I know. I did have an issue in the first book where the stats and powers/character sheet was done over and over to a point it was like a well that Eric kept going to so as to boost a word count here and there, but as the series goes on it does peter out more and more until it becomes more manageable and less annoying. Neil Hellegers keeps popping up in more and more Litrpg books lately, sometimes I am a fan, other times I think he just does ok. This is a fella for whom the material matters. For example, he was perfect in the Great Filter until the last chapter and then didn’t fit so well. Not his fault, Just the way it panned out, but here he just kills. He is meant to play Montana the barbarian, and he does it well. This match, his voice and this story, is a rare melding of narrator and author but more importantly, narrator and character. It reminds me of how Jeff Hays and Quantum Hughes are made for one another. 8.5 stars I loved this book.

Redemption LITRPG
Good story, i was pretty surprised by how well it was done. The start was different and a bit confusing (got more cleared up later). overall it's a redemption story of a "Bad guy" in a previous difficult situation, trying to start over in a different world. pS. main character is a bit OP.

Another moron MC... somehow fails to ruin this LitRPG book.
I’m not sure what is so interesting to GameLit authors about MCs who are too stupid to live. Whenever I actually make it to the end of one of these books (which is exceedingly rare) it’s always because the rest of the story was good enough to make up for how frustrating the dolt of an MC was. I never think to myself, “Wow, this book was so much more enjoyable because the MC’s actions make almost no sense... His inability to make reasonable decisions based on provided information made this audiobook a five star experience!!!” Yeah. That never happens. In a very few exceptional situations, I get to the end of an audiobook with a ding-dong for an MC and think, “Wow, in spite of being mildly to extremely annoyed the whole way through this book, I find myself still wanting to know what happens next.” This is one of those unusual books. I will definitely be getting the next book in this series. I will just hope that the author puts some stat points in his own intelligence pool and drops the superfluous idiocy going forward.

Like The Land, Except Actually Good
The main issue I have with reborn-in-an-RPG-world books is that the character writing, and everything else in fact, is put aside in favor of stats, stats, and more stats. This one definitely starts out slow and plodding in a similar way, which made me ready to put this series aside as another false start. But once the MC reaches a populated area, it starts introducing characters and world building that seem deep in a way I rarely catch glimpse of in a story like this. I want to learn more about this world and these people, regardless of what numbers assigned to attributes or skills are involved. I will definitely be continuing with this series, and this author.

Fun and Entertaining Series
I actually just finished the 3rd book in this series so feel pretty comfortable about writing a review. In general this is a fun litrpg series that doesn't take itself too seriously. The humor is sarcastic, quick, and crass at times. The profanity is strong, but it's also part of the humor style. It's easy to relate to for someone like me that is an older demographic and kind of grew up with this kind of humor among friends. The narrator is absolutely fantastic with his tone and timing in reading the material, and I can totally see him as the MC. Seriously amazing job! I found myself laughing out loud on more than a few occasions at the quips and jokes the MC and his supporting cast toss at each other (particularly the otters), it's extremely entertaining and part of the real reason this series is worth a read I think. This is NOT a harem series (at least not so far), so don't expect any kind of romance or sexual trysts. In fact, having just read book three the MC has still not had even one romantic interest (though there might be inklings of one perhaps sparking in the 3rd book). In terms of rpg the elements are kind of weak and the MC is completely overpowered too soon. In very short order in the first book the MC goes from zero to demi-god strength. However, the author does balance a lot of his abrupt power with his obvious impulsiveness and lack of critical thinking. It's pretty refreshing at times to just sit back and watch the bull in the china shop go nuts. There are folks that will complain that's this is yet another litrpg where the MC is an idiot that doesn't really take full advantage of their powers or makes stupid decisions. However it does seem rather intentional that the MC is not perfect or particularly bright in that regard, and hence allows some flexibility for the author to have some fun having him make rash decisions. The rpg system and monsters are based loosely on standard dnd so pretty easy to relate to. The story itself is slightly interesting, although I get the sense at times the author appears to be just making stuff up on the fly regarding the gods and the politics of the world. Much of the reason for his power creep appears hacked on at times by some of these half explained elements just to help speed along the progression which seems a little lazy. However the supporting characters and well detailed locations do have some depth so that does keep the world at least a little more immersive and the story not overly shallow. Probably the only criticism I have is the rather short nature of each book and how all three books thus far appear to have been one book originally but were cut up in order to maximize profit. I understand the author needs some kind of return, but whoever made the decision to break it up wasn't thinking too well. It would have been better to make the first book free and then combine the other two into one, or just make it one large book. As it is now each book ends on an obvious chapter break and each new book starts without any real transition between chapters which makes it pretty obvious. Overall though I am very much enjoying this series and highly recommend it to anyone looking for something light and entertaining.

This is a Story is it?
Freaking. Boring. Guy lives a life of crime. Guy nearly dies. Guy gets teleported into magical world. Guy does something stupid. Guy dies. Guy acts a little more sensibly. And then the plot becomes Viking lives of the eight hundred and fifties. No magic. No interesting people.

Some good, some bad.
As a first book, this wasn't a bad read for this genre. I'm used to longer books than this, so it did feel a little short and left off in an awkward spot as I'm not a fan of those type of up in the air endings when you have to wait ages normally for books to come out. I nearly gave up on this very early on because for some reason the author has decided to make his character a moron. Want nearly caused me to give up was the MC's first actions when he got into the world. Despite the fact it isn't a game he keeps calling it a game. Despite knowing he has limited respawns he treats the idea of dying with a shrug of his shoulders. He decides to pull a James Bond type action where he used a coffin to escape down a mountain only the MC uses a shield. I mean how did he expect that to turn out exactly? And why do it at all? When that costs he said shield and his sword, does he go and try to find them? Nope. Why? Because monsters might have eaten them. Yes, monsters eat god forged legendary weapons all the time. They are great food sources and easy to eat and digest. So good in fact they are all giving up on flesh as a food source. Still, after that it wasn't a bad read on the whole and I quite enjoyed it. It needs more work, as there really isn't much new here, and the continued stupid behaviour continues to the point I felt the author was forcing it. By that I mean the MC knows he must not show himself to be from another wold but keeps on using words and phrases that are obviously not going to be understood by the other people from the world he is on. Like he keeps calling people, "dude", or "buddy" and uses phrases like, "Out of the frying pan and into the fire." For the most part the book is okay and as a base first book it is worth a read. It's not the best of this genre, but there are far worse ones out there too. I gave it 3 stars for the story, but I'd likely have pushed it to 3.5 if I could have. It's not quite a four, but not a 3 either. Very slightly above average because of the annoyances I had with the character being more moronic than I believed anyone actually would be in reality knowing they needed to be careful.

Well done novel and audio execution
The audio kept me entertained and wanting more, the narrator did a wonderful job at character voicing and pacing. The story was well done and flowed nicely, my only issues were a few repetitions where the MC was told the same thing about the game system by different people and didn’t know the issue each time. A few things forgotten along the way can be overlooked as the plot worked well.
