About this listen
Paul manages an old-school plastics factory that has pivoted during the pandemic to making face masks and is now booming. Along comes Emily, the wayward daughter of an old friend, whom Paul hires to be his assistant, and she’s a sparkling force determined to prove her worth with the one chance she’s been given.
Imogen, a beautiful former acquaintance of Paul’s, also coincidently appears outside the factory, down on her luck and clearly full of ulterior motive. The masked truths of the women around him soon threaten to turn Paul’s quiet family life upside down.

Listening to this on Audible, I couldn't help but hear Thunderbirds Jeff Tracy in Paul (sorry narrator Luke Arnold). But I guess Jeff and Paul are kindred spirits, successful family guys who want to do right by everyone. F.A.B.

One Chance had me thoroughly immersed in the small town corporate pandemic world of the virtuous main character, factory owner Paul, and I deeply enjoyed all of the sub-plots that weaved in and out of his story.
A bit about the characters: The Russian wife was a (surprisingly) deep, non-stereotypical and well thought-out character, Personal Assistant Emily reminded me of a few millennials I know, and I quietly grew to love the gentle spirit of the main character Paul’s 5-year-old son Cody.
The author writes well in the voice of a male main character, equally as well as she writes the female voice, and vocal actor Luke Arnold who was a strong choice for the role of narrator.
Caroline Overington is such an artist in this space and my heart leapt to and fro as I felt each of her brushstrokes hitting the page whilst listening to and consuming this thoughtful and insightful piece.
It’s a “must read” for young and old.
Corporate drama meets dystopian romance

However, just as the story gets interesting, suddenly it was over, like being dumped by a huge wave. I was left a bit bewildered by the author's decision to rush towards an ending that was somewhat unexpected and while it tied up the loose ends, just felt rushed and unsatisfying.
Easy listen, but very abrupt ending
