About this listen

A rebel pixie princess. A deadly competition between five faerie clans. Will she win the crown or die trying?

Pixie pirate Quinn may be an outlaw, wanted by all five faerie clans, but she prefers it that way. All she wants is to finally become a captain and bury her true identity beneath the rolling waves. But when the sudden death of her twin brother causes her to plot a vengeful heist, a shocking betrayal unmasks her for who she really is—her people’s last living heir.

Her only hope of escaping certain death for her crimes is taking her brother’s place in the Ethodine: a dangerous competition for the faerie crown.

In a series of death-defying trials, Quinn faces off with the heirs of four rival clans:

A mute beast tamer.
A flirtatious merman.
A half-blind artist.
And a pompous princess.

But as dark secrets unravel and an ancient prophecy entwines their fates, rivals must become allies before there’s no world left to rule.

On Wings of Ash and Dust is the action-packed first book in this YA epic fantasy. If you're looking for a fresh take on fae magic, deadly trials, and royal intrigue with a dash of enemies-to-lovers, then you’ll adore Brittany Wang’s whimsical and dangerous tale.

Critic Reviews

On Wings of Ash and Dust is a wild, glittering, glorious ride from start to finish. Every single character shines in their own unique way, but Quinn especially is a powerhouse of a character. I haven’t rooted so hard for a protagonist to succeed in quite some time! This series has everything: a little romance, a little (a lot of) competition, a little found family, a little enemies to allies to lovers...this book is a delight, and definitely a new favorite!” (Cassidy Clarke, author of The Saltwater Heir)

Beautiful Concept, But Fell Flat

I really wanted to enjoy On Wings of Ash and Dust—the concept had potential, and I was excited to dive into a fae-centered fantasy. Unfortunately, the experience fell flat for me.

I listened to the audiobook version on Audible, but the narration was difficult to get through. The delivery felt overly theatrical and didn’t suit the tone I was expecting from a fantasy novel aimed at a slightly older audience. It came across more like a children’s storybook, which made it hard to stay engaged.

As for the story itself, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but it was missing that spark or depth I look for in fantasy. The world-building felt surface-level, and the characters didn’t draw me in. I gave it a fair shot but ultimately couldn’t make it past chapter five.

That said, I know others might enjoy this if they’re looking for a light, whimsical read with fairytale vibes—but it just wasn’t for me.
