About this listen

Having already pedalled 18,000 miles from Britain to Beijing, Charlie Walker’s homeward leg carried him a further 26,000 miles through Central Asia, the Middle East, and Africa.

The two-and-a-half-year journey spanned the mountains and deserts of former Soviet Republics, Afghanistan on the fearful brink of foreign withdrawal, and remote corners of the Congolese jungle. From hiking through sandstorms in the Gobi desert to barreling down rapids in a dugout canoe, this perilous adventure, and Charlie’s many encounters along the way, gives insight into the past, present, and future of often-overlooked places during periods of great change.

It is amazing what Charlie went through on this mammoth 4 year journey. Such courage and stamina. He tells the story well.

The story was enthralling. The narration engaging. This story is well told and well performed. I was worried this would just be another self-absorbed cycle touring book. But is it not at all. The author tells his story through his connections with other people not just his own lens. I laughed. I felt sadness. I felt his coming of age while also learning about the people and places he experienced. That he shares historical and cultural information about places brought me into those worlds. One of my favourite travel stories. Good thing it’s two books: I got to listen to more!

Brilliant

Loved it! From start to finish, and then I listen again because there was so much in this journey woven with history and authentic impressions without gawdy judgements, I felt I was riding along beside the author, around every pot hole and 9th puncture for the day through hostile conditions to welcoming homes of all shapes and sizes. Charlie is a legend in my opinion. His epic adventure down an uncharted river in the Congo was breathtaking. He never seemed to be to phased or to heroic in his demeanour. Charlie's ability to narrate his journey with the correct accent and nuances was very impressive. I highly recommend it.

Exceptional adventure.

There is nothing worse than someone narrating their own story : a good adventurer makes not a good narrator in this very specific medium …:

Adventurer doesn’t equal narrator
