About this listen

Dickie Arbiter was spokesman for the queen during the most turbulent period of her reign. On Duty with the Queen is an open and engaging account of his life and his fascinating role in serving this unique family at a time of momentous change.

Dickie gives his personal insights into events that shaped his relationship with the royal family over the years, from joining the queen on a picnic at Balmoral in 1988 to being alongside her at the time of the death of Diana Princess of Wales in 1997.

In this honest and entertaining audiobook, Dickie Arbiter recounts his life's journey from a broadcast journalist to becoming a press spokesman to the royal family and back again to journalism. He discusses the inner workings of everyday life in Buckingham Palace and what it was really like to work under the media spotlight with the most famous family in the world.

What started as personal project has ended as a delightful and well presented book. Easy to listen to, the author weaves his story around his employment with the British royal family with decorum and simplicity. A tendency to repeat statements is the only detraction but the finished product is highly recommended.

Delightful and engaging

Loved this audio book and sped through perfectly at 1.5 times speed on my walk , he has a clear and concise voice and some very interesting things to say. Living in London in the 1990s it’s good to now go back and hear about things with more clarity and perspective, hard to do when you’re busy running around at work.

Loved it , 5 Stars

A pleasant coverage of life as a courtier. A little different because of some of the topics covered. By default these people need to grovel which is pretty sickening. Each to their own however.

Pleasant narration.
