About this listen

Olivia Colman reads an abridged version E. Nesbit's classic novel. The Railway Children is a masterpiece of children's fiction. It wonderfully evokes a bygone age and is packed with fun, excitement and adventure.

When their father goes away unexpectedly, Roberta (Bobbie), Peter and Phyllis have to move from London to a cottage in the countryside. At the local station they make friends with the porter, Perks, and spend their time waving to the passengers on the trains. But although they have many adventures, one question still remains: is their father ever coming back?

The story of the children's attempt to avert disaster on the line, the mystery surrounding their father and Bobbie's resourcefulness has been cherished by generations.

Please note: this is an abridged version of The Railway Children.

I loved this, although I knew I would, as I loved the movie version my Grandma had on video tape when I was little. And while the book was much shorter than I expected it to be, it was read beautifully by the narrator.

Loved It and Highly Recommend

The narrator was great. A lovely story for children. Good imagery of yester-year's Britain. Some very sweet & funny parts.

E. Nesbit's books are a part of the golden age of children's literature. Elegant, simple writing. Meaningful stories that touch in some way the notion of the Fable.

A short abridged version were much of the fullness of the original book is lost. Production quality is of a good standard and the narrator's voice is easy to listen to.

Left something else

Lovely to hear Olivia Coleman but not enough to consider a wonderful book too heavily discounted by being abridged. Not enough of the story to build up suspense. Disappointing.

Great story spoiled by it being abridgded
