Story
When John Thaw, star of The Sweeney and Inspector Morse, died from cancer in 2002, a nation lost one of its finest actors and Sheila Hancock lost a beloved husband. In this unique double biography she chronicles their lives - personal and professional, together and apart. John Thaw was born in Manchester, the son of a lorry driver. When he arrived at RADA on a scholarship he felt an outsider. In fact his timing was perfect: it was the sixties and television was beginning to make its mark.

Just Me is a book about moving on, but it is also about looking back, and looking anew. Sheila, whether facing down burglars and Easyjet staff or making friends with waiters and taxi drivers, whether unearthing secrets in Budapest, getting arrested in Thailand, exulting in the art of Venice or searching for a decent cup of coffee in Dorset, is never less than stimulating company.

Story
Will She Do? is the story of a girl from a council estate in Tottenham, born in 1934 to an electric-meter reader and a seamstress, who was determined to be an actress. Candid and witty, this memoir takes her from her awkward performances in working-men's clubs at six years of age as dancing 'Baby Eileen', through the war years in London, to her breakthrough at 32 on Broadway with The Killing of Sister George, for which she received the first of five Tony Award nominations.

Publisher's Summary
Bloomsbury presents Old Rage by Sheila Hancock, read by Sheila Hancock.
Sheila Hancock looked like she was managing old age. She had weathered and even thrived in widowhood, taking on acting roles that would have been demanding for a woman half her age. She had energy, friends, a devoted family, a lovely home. She could still remember her lines.
So why, at 89, having sailed past supposedly disturbing milestones—50, 70 even 80—without a qualm, did she suddenly feel so furious? Shocking diagnoses, Brexit and bereavement seemed to knock her from every quarter. And that was before lockdown.
Home alone, classified as ‘extremely vulnerable’, she finds herself yelling at the TV and talking to the pigeons. But she can at least take a good long look at life—her work and family, her beliefs (many of them the legacy of her wartime childhood) and, uncomfortable as it might be to face, her future.
In Old Rage, one of Britain’s best-loved actors opens up about her ninth decade. Funny, feisty, honest, she makes for brilliant company as she talks about her life as a daughter, a sister, a mother, a widow, an actor, a friend and looks at a world so different from the wartime world of her childhood. And yet—despite age, despite rage—she finds there are always reasons for joy.
Critic Reviews

"Sheila Hancock’s memoir Old Rage promises to be funny, feisty and honest." (Irish Independent, Books of the year 2022)

Less rage and more carefully considered reflection
Sheila Hancock reflects beautifully on her life and how it has impacted on her recent experience. She thoughtfully and naturally weaves her experiences of both a personal and professional nature with current societal challenges.

Surprisingly good
To be honest I had to Google who Sheila Hancock was.
However, after learning a little more about her I thought I'd give it a go and I'm glad I did.
I've always thought older people are such great story tellers and Sheila is no exception.
Sharp, witty, clever. I really enjoyed this, I could easily have listened to another 8 hours worth.

Disappointing
Well written and read. Too political and less entertaining for me. Couple of amusing anecdotes but she’s very into her own ideals
