Publisher's Summary
A mysterious entity may be the key to a starship’s survival - or a terrifying new threat - as the Odyssey One series continues...
The Empire has set its sights on its next target: human Terrans. As effective allies of the Priminae, the denizens of Earth have proven themselves enemies to the Empire, and now the Imperial forces know more about the Terran home world than ever before.
The battle for the planet’s survival will see the Odysseus first into the breach. But more perils loom for Commodore Eric Weston and his comrades. They’re at odds with the political conflicts dividing Earth’s government and challenged by the mysterious presence haunting their vessel - its intentions unclear, and the extent of its powers unknown.
As the Empire brings the battle home, the crew of the Odysseus will need to determine whether this entity will support them in their fight for survival, or prove to be another dangerous foe.
There’s no turning back...and the only way forward may be a pathway to doom.

Really hope he continues this series
I loved it. I would have liked more info about the hail Mary at the end - but then it wouldn't have been a surprise. Maybe felt a little rushed compared to the previous books, there were time chunks missing at the end. In saying that I really enjoyed it and can see so much scope that hasn't yet been explored.

A series that griped my imagination
This series was one of the most excellent sci-fi stories that I have ever enjoyed!
Of course, that's my personal opinion and this story type is to my liking.
Here are a list of pros to me that may be cons to others:
Detail - Evan Currie would seem to love detail! From space battle description to weapons to ships to armour to physics to stellar behaviour and everything in-between. I LOVE it! A lot of the concepts utilised heavily are speculative but are based in solid scientific theories and expanded upon thusly.
Semi fantasy-like inclusion:
Odysseus, Giai, Sol, and Central: all of these characters are Gestalt beings. I have never encountered this concept in sci-fi, and in many ways, the unexplained nature of their existence feels fantasy-like. To me, I thought that would ruin the feel of this series at first, but I quickly grew to enjoy it as mysteries were dangled in front of me about what they are, where they came from, what their plans may be - and as is alluded, what Gestalt is pushing the empire.
Final pro for me that I think might be a con to others (there are MANY other purely pros from me that I could babble about).
Repetition:
So certain points, or many points for that matter; are repeated in varying ways throughout each story. I do believe that if I were a listener just doing normal stuff that would annoy me sometimes.
But as this is what I listen to during my work and I don't always listen consistently, I find the repeated points to be good to jog my memory back to their point at hand or the details that were expanded upon previously.
I loved the characters, I do feel some could have been more fleshed out. I also feel that with the described durations of time between events that there could have been more character-driven shipboard or planet-bound relationships or circumstances to consider.
I LOVED the imaginative take on current science, scientific theory, popular culture inspiration and human social evolution.
I am moving on to Archangel One in the hopes that it is at least as good as this.
Thank you for the fantastic novel Evan!

A great military Sci Fi
you will see people complaining that it is a fantasy now and that they came for sci fi, but everything in the book has a possible future. just because they dont think Gestalts can be a thing they say it is fantasy. it is amazing and truly enjoyable.

Good recovery from previous book
Overall this entry in the Odyssey series was pretty good. It was a clear step up from the disaster that was the last book. There were multiple battles (although small) that kept the story going instead of 1 long drawn out battle. The story also answered some questions that were brought up in previous books. Some downside to the book is that the author seems to ignore pieces of the story that were developed in previous books as well as not give enough information about certain aspects, is as if he has to hit a minimum number of pages and just gives up when he does. This book also just took a large time jump to skip past some smaller battles but didn't even talk about what occurred in those battles. Some numbers would be nice, how many are in the enemy force after the previous 7-8 battles, you've been thinning out their forces but don't let the reader know to what effect. As I said, this was much improved over the last couple of entries in the series, so hopefully that is a good sign as to whats next.

If I Wanted Fantasy....
I was really enjoying Evan Currie’s Odyssey series - that is, until his “science fiction” morphed into “fantasy,” starting with “Odysseus Awakening” and becoming even more glaringly fantastic in “Odysseus Ascendant”. I’m not quite half way through the book and I’m thinking, “Give me a BREAK!” I’ve been HOPING that the new fantasy characters would turn out to be a mortal alien species, but naming one “Gaia” and implying that she and the others similar to her were possibly immortal, well, that has really put me off.

Is there any more to the storyline
Loved all the stories are there going to be any more, of Odysseus stories or ark angles. Story left off in a good spot. If stories are going to stop you should say that at the end of the book so us fans don't sit around and keep waiting for the next one. Thanks. Horseydorsey

Nice but shallow and illogical.
I just finished the entire series, and the fillings are very mixed.
The books are generally good and even somewhat absorbing. At the same time, all feels very shallow and barely believable.
All weapon improvements during the war with empire coming only from two captains. Not only all Earth researchers not coming with any improvements, but it seems even improved torpedoes and drones not used by home fleet defending Earth. Not mentioned any effort to improve tachyon canons. This in spite of the fact that it was mentioned that one of the colonial fleet captains attempted to compensate for gravity distortions and even got some promising results. Sci-fi should be still based on logic. And logic is missing very much from all these series.
I also have issues wit gestalts. Not because of the introduction of gestalts brakes sci-fi rules, but because of the fact that it is not adding any value to the story. It seems like the author wanted to add content but was unable to come with anything relevant. So, he slapped some not relevant fantasy to the main theme.
Bottom line, mainly because of lack of logic I don't think I will read this author more.
