Publisher's Summary

Darkness seeps deeper into the world. The gods can only watch from afar. Time is running out.

Jim and his friends found a way to stop the evil infesting the leadership of the Empire, but the shadows of the world are not all cast by the demon incursion. There's plenty of darkness already dwelling within the corrupted heart of the Empire.

One of the team goes missing, and Jim has to find them before it’s too late. They have a chance to reach the Western Province before the nox infection spreads, but having the entire team is paramount to their success. They'll have to find a way to come together, or risk the Empire sinking completely into the darkness.

No pressure, it's just the fate of the world.

Redshirts, Rivalries and Repetition

Feeling a lot more formulaic this time round, our intrepid adventurers head onto the high seas to face more Nox and more horrible excuses for human beings. There's still great writing, some fun moments of levity and an interesting and winding adventure (if a little expected and repetitive feeling at times), but the loss of a possibly interesting and new relationship to return to the grind this time around, was a little disappointing for me, here's hoping to a little more light for our MC in the next edition. Oh, and as usual, Travis's narration is excellent!

Red-shirted crewmates woes crosses realms

Michael Head nails another book in the series. As the title implies, this book takes Jim and his besties on a sea cruise ... of DEATH! All the while, the nox are proliferating. The team is still down one bestie, but they do encounter others who are of dubious integrity to assist them at times. The enemy and monster encounters are thrilling and of different horror levels in both sight and strength. The book does move the story ahead through another kingdom and does so without encountering what would be referred to as filler text. There were a few cultural touchstones that are briefly written into the story. The most obvious tell was this passage, "This time, we went to shore to inspect the burning village in a much larger group. Donny, Valerie, Chu, Jamila, Sergeant Ward, Captain Hail, and a sailor...who was wearing a red shirt and inexplicably mumbling about unfair situations—took two trips to get ashore." Clearly, the author meant it to be an obvious reference and the following passages could have been shortened to ... "wait for it ... wait for it ... Ripped In Pieces (R.I.P.)

Travis Baldree continues to be a joy to enjoy his performance.

Great as Usual, But Jim Seemed Less Awesome

I really enjoyed the story, and the growth of the other characters in Jim's party was good, but I felt like Jim was a bit off. For large portions of the story, Jim seemed either like he wasn't trying, or wasn't as awesome as he was in the first books. Don't get me wrong, whenever a big bad guy showed up he would become awesome again, but then after that he would go back to before. Also, I think its good to make the other characters in the party become stronger and self-sufficient, but they shouldn't be able to catch up to Jim given his talent and experience. I kept expecting to hear Jim doing some crazy complicated cultivation technique that the others just weren't able to do (nothing against them, but a master should be capable of more) which would significantly increase his growth, but that didn't happen much. Its always a challenge in books trying to make the secondary characters strong characters in their right without "nerfing" the main character. I think it's definitely possible to write strong and talented secondary characters while still keeping Jim way ahead (because frankly that is part of the fun of the books). Anyway, it was a really fun book, but I hope the author lets Jim be more awesome again in the next book.

solid development and badass MC.

this is how cultivation stories should be. hard work solid characters and awesome interaction..the best part is that the side quest are not distractions at all but are clearly moving the story and characters forward...I can't wait for Corey to join them again along with their new teammate...this honestly should be blowing up like will Wright's cradle. it's that good!!

Another great book with great narration. Seriously loving this story line. M. Head does a fabulous job at progressing this story along without it feeling too rushed or themain character being too OP. Keep em coming!

Awesome

When a book has a line like "I can't believe I have to tell you this but never throw a baby!" it's either going to be terrible or amazing. this is amazing. highly recommend it

Great series

This is one of my favorite series. I look forward to the next book and to see how much Jim can increase his kill count
