I’m one placement away from becoming a fully fledged London detective. It’s bad enough that my last assignment before I qualify is with Supernatural Squad. But that’s nothing compared to what happens next. Brutally murdered by an unknown assailant, I wake up 12 hours later in the morgue - and I’m very much alive. I don’t know how or why it happened. As a guild bartender, I can handle pretty much anything - mages, sorcerers, witches, the occasional demon. But show me anything family-related and I'd rather run for the hills. It doesn't even have to be my family. So I have no idea why I thought spending the holidays with Aaron's mom and pop was a good idea. Meeting his famous parents is already terrifying enough, but I've got a bigger problem. Students of his family's renowned mage academy are being attacked on the grounds - and somehow no one has seen a single assailant?

From the moment Dara of Westwood spied the Silver Headed Raptor nesting in Rundeval Peak, the precocious redheaded 12-year-old girl was enchanted. The youngest daughter of the Master of the Wood lived in ramshackle Westwood Hall, in the independently minded Westwood estate of Sevendor. Her determination to capture a baby falcon and train it wasn’t hampered by the fact that Dara had never climbed a mountain, had never been trained in falconry, or even remotely had permission from her father to do it.

Something has always been missing from my life. A hole that I could never seem to fill. When I accidentally turn a coven of witches into nightmares, I find out what that something is. Magic. And it turns out, I have a crap load of it. As a latent power awakens deep inside of me, I'm exposed to one of the most powerful and corrupt organizations in the magical world - the Mages' Guild. Story
After narrowly surviving my debut into the magical world, I made a promise to myself: no more hiding in broom closets. But with the Mages' Guild reorganizing faster than anyone thought possible, and naming me as their number one target, that promise seems a little far-fetched. Especially since my training with Callie and Dizzy, the highly experienced dual-mage pair, goes off like a cake in a cannon. Left to find someone that can fill the role, it isn't until a formal dinner party goes horribly wrong that I find the best (and worst) solution imaginable: Reagan Somerset, the leather-clad crazy woman who busted into my broom closet sanctuary in the first place.

Publisher's Summary
In the Royal States of America, magic rules all, but life - and love - always finds a way.
Born without magic, Mackenzie Little has few prospects. In a futile attempt to break her out of the null caste, her mother ropes her into participating in a charity auction, where anything can be bought with enough money. She never expected her ex-boss, Dylan Mason, an elite with a love of driving her crazy, would buy her company. For a day, she's happy to live a fairy tale. Nine months later, despite all their precautions, Mackenzie's little miracle is born.
Armed only with Texas pride and New York viciousness, Mackenzie fights through hell or high water to protect her tiny family of two from a society obsessed with magic. The last thing she needs is to land in the middle of a mess doomed to make her, a null, the grand prize of a battle between royals.
Contains mature themes.

Nice clean romantic fantasy
Lovely romantic fantasy book. Story kept me not so much as intrigued but cheering for the couple. It’s nice to have a romance that’s fun and sexy without the obscenity common with today’s novels. I’m not a prude but want to hear a story not consistent sex scenes

What an interesting concept
The US is split up into Magic sovereign kingdoms. Anyone who doesn’t have magic is considered less. Mackenzie is tired of being unappreciated and snaps making big changes and falling under the wins of the magic makers and her mother. 10 years later in the job of her dreams and a daughter she adores, she comes full circle and has to plan an event that started her path to loneliness and denial.

Good start to a new series
I really was intrigued by the story and appreciate the writer's style. S Copperfield did a great job painting a complete picture of the background details & giving depth to her characters. I have listened to the second book in the series now and enjoyed it as much or more than this one.
I will be continuing with the series. It's easy to listen to and I enjoy the unique settings and stories for each royal family. There is magic in the series but its not so extravagant that it takes over as the only story line.
This review is rather simple but its really that easy; the series has enough going on to intrigue me and keep me wanting more. I just started the 3rd book in the series and so far its got me drawn in.

Pure entertainment
The #1 reason this is a 4 vs a 5? Description.
While the dialogue is priceless, there is very little description of anything or anyone other than personality.
I was sad that there weren't any sex scenes considering how hot the lead-ins were, but it didn't detract from the story too much. Just something you should know going in.
The #2 reason this is a 4 vs a 5 is strongly related to the first. There was very little world building to explain anything. And right when you're dealing from a complete gloss over of their 24 hours together, the author just glosses over almost eleven years.
The narrator was good, but she didn't have a strong difference between 'Dylan's' voice and other men of a similar age. Also, she wasn't able to do much of a Texas accent- which was sad since this took place mostly in Texas.
Overall, this is a thoroughly entertaining book and I will likely listen to more in the series; but with either more effort or a second author this could have become SO much more.

Wonderful book
If you like RJ Blain, you will like Susan Copperfield. This is an interesting worls she has created where the United States is the Royal States and class is determined by magical ability. Underlying are some serious themes about society that are handled with great aplomb and in the printed book there is a reference to actual resources. I loved this book and look forward to the rest of the series. The characters are well written and I love the narrator here for the audiobook. Happy endings happen!

supper cute
This book is supper cute. I have to admit I was a little confused on what order to read this series in as Amazon and audible have rhe books in different orders. I recommend reading storm caller first which is what I did as it give you the background story on the Texas king and queen. That being said its not necessary and what ever order you do read this in you'll love the series.

Love this author
Irreverent, funny, fast paced. Female lead who is a force of nature and flawed at the same time. Great alternative USA world building.
I love Susan Copperfield's books. This is the first of this series and my favourite of the series so far but I've re-read and enjoyed all three of them a number of times. Now I have the pleasure of listening to it in the car too. Thank you!
I was worried about how good a job the narrator would do but she's good!
BTW this is a prolific writer who writes as RJ Blain and other names too.
PS Don't get bent out of shape by the apparent acceptance of child marriage. This is further explored and dealt with as the series progresses and is a perfectly acceptable use of the age old practice of dealing with a real word issue in a fictional universe.
